Townhouse fire caused by fireworks

A fire July at a townhouse in River Creek, east of Leesburg, that caused about $400,500 in damage was caused by improperly disposed fireworks.

The Loudoun County Fire Marshal's Office issued the homeowner a summons for carelessly damaging property by fire and for possession of illegal fireworks, Loudoun County Fire-Rescue spokeswoman Mary Maguire said.

Around 11:12 p.m., fire-rescue units were called to 18408 Lanier Island Square for a two-alarm fire. A neighbor who saw smoke in the back of the house had called 911.

The home sustained lots of fire and smoke damage along with a neighboring house, Maguire said.

One volunteer emergency medical technician was treated and released at an area hospital for a minor shoulder injury. No one else was injured, Maguire said.

The resident of the house was displaced and is staying with nearby relatives.
