Youth and school

$3,000 given to support teen night: Allan Kleban, vice president of Konover Construction, dropped in on the weekly "teen night" at Claude More Recreation Center in Sterling and gave a check for $3,000 to to Steve Sawyer, Parks, Recreation and Community Services division manager.

The money, given on the one-year anniversary of the center's opening, will be used to bring down the $5 cost of admission to the Friday and Saturday night events for middle and high school youngsters. Youth in the area who have heard about the evenings of swimming, rock climbing, games, music and refreshments will now be able to attend, Sawyer said.

Call 571-258-3600, or e-mail www.cmrcteens@gmail.com for more on the teen nights.

Shenandoah to move: Construction is under way on Scholar Plaza, near Janelia Farm in Ashburn, on Shenandoah University's new Northern Virginia home campus. The school will move from the Leesburg offices at the end of the first semester of the 2008-09 school year.

The 25,000-square-foot building will double the size of the campus, and will include a multifunction room for guest speakers and events, study areas, and spaces for smaller classes. Three classrooms will include observation areas and present options for testing new teaching methods. There are three laboratories, advanced computer labs and the latest in smart board technology.

The university's Northern Virginia campus will be up and running in its new home at the start of the second semester, Jan. 12, 2009.

Tops in history: A week remains to the May 21 deadline to nominate an outstanding teacher for the History Teacher of the Year Award from historic Mount Vernon. The award, supported by an endowment from the Robertson Foundation, carries a $5,000 cash prize and an all-expenses paid trip to Mount Vernon for the winner's students. All teachers in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area who teach American history in grades three through 12 and have at least two years of classroom experience are eligible.

New school sited: The School Board got the go-ahead to putting the next Dulles-area elementary school on a 22-acre proffered site in the Seven Hills development, just off Gum Spring Road. The school is scheduled to open for students at the beginning of the 2010-11 school year.
