Hixon earns invite

Avis Hixon, an athlete with Leesburg-based APEX Gymnastics, will be one of seven representatives of Region 7 at the Level 10 Junior Olympic Nationals in Kissimmee, Fla., on May 18.

Hixon competed at the Level 10 Regional Championships May 3 and 4 in Newport News, finishing 10th in both floor exercise and all-around. Her floor routine featured two double back flips and a full twisting front layout.

Hixon will attend Towson University in the fall, where she will continue her gymnastics career.

Taking names

Williams Martial Arts & Fitness hosted the Region II tournament of the Amateur Athletic Union May 4 at Broad Run High School. A total of 125 gold medals were awarded to local junior and senior martial artists.
Among junior competitors, seven earned golds in kobudo (weapons), 15 placed first in kata (forms) and 11 won gold in kumite (sparring). Five-year-old beginner Jordan Codella found gold in all three categories, as did 12-year-old intermediate-level Demi Juranek.

The 16-member WMAF competition team will be heading for Albany, N.Y., June 30 through July 5 to compete in the 2008 AAU Junior & Senior Karate National Championships.
