Park View graduate aims for Republican National Convention
Michael Monrroy is only 18 years old, but he could be on his way to attending the Republican National Convention this summer.
Monrroy, a 2007 Park View High School graduate and sophomore at American University, is participating in Crash the Parties, a national competition sponsored by SiTV, a Latino cable channel, and Voto Latino, a group that encourages voting.
"It's been a great experience," he said. "It teaches you grassroots campaigning basically."
Monrroy said he is studying political science and hopes to be a politician someday. For now, he's enjoying the experience of creating a profile and video at www.crashtheparties08.com and promoting himself as a candidate.
"Since an early age, I have tried to find out all I can about our democracy and how our government works," he said in his online profile. "I am not embarrassed to say that I am a proud Latino, a proud Republican and a proud American."
Visitors to the Crash the Parties site can log in and vote for the contestant of their choice. Each person can vote once a day through June 18.
Monrroy, who is leading in votes for the Republican side, said he's been promoting himself through www.facebook.com and by spreading the word through e-mail and word of mouth.
The Crash the Parties contest is open to 18- to 28-year-olds all across the country and encourages Internet users to vote for their favorite to represent SiTV and Voto Latino at the national conventions this summer. There are more than 120 contest participants.
A winner will be chosen from each of the Democratic and Republican parties.
One will act as a reporter for SiTV at the Democratic Convention in Denver in August and the other will do the same from the Republican Convention in Minneapolis in September.
Monrroy said he's always enjoyed learning about history and government, so it makes sense politics is what he wants to do for his career.
"I like to be able to do something that actually makes a difference," he said. "That's an amazing thing."
To check Monrroy's profile or vote for him, go to www.crashtheparties08.com and search for Monrroy's name or go to the state of Virginia to find his profile.
