Fuel spill leaks into Sycolin Creek
A fuel spill at a gas station on U.S. 15 May 20 leaked into Sycolin Creek, springing Loudoun County Fire, Rescue and Emergency Management workers into action to stop it from going farther.
The spill happened shortly after 3 p.m. in the 19500 block of U.S. 15, south of Leesburg.
Fire and rescue units arrived on the scene to find a fuel truck offloading diesel fuel at the gas station.
About 300 gallons of the diesel fuel spilled, flowing quickly to the storm drain and into nearby Sycolin Creek, flowing toward Gleedsville Road.
Fire and rescue crews quickly contained the spill, placing protective booms in Sycolin Creek to collect the product. This saved the fuel from flowing into nearby Goose Creek, a major source of drinking water for Loudoun residents.
As a result of the incident, the Loudoun County Fire Marshal's Office issued a correction order to the owners of the truck, Holtzman Oil Company, to clean up the spill. The cleanup will be handled by the company’s hazardous materials response team.
