Ashburn

Open house, grocery benefit, the Loudoun Chorale, the Farmers Market, hearing change and Christmas in October

By Jeanette Gandhi

Open house. Don't' miss this Saturday's open house/family day at the Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department 1-4 p.m. There's something for everyone at this event, including fire truck rides, a moon bounce, balloon artist, rescue helicopter, silent auction and a smoke house. (I don't think they mean barbecue.)

This year, for the first time ever, there will be a chili cookoff. If you think you make the meanest chili in Ashburn, enter today. For more information, frequently-asked-questions and rules, e-mail openhouse@ashburnfirerescue.org. or visit www.ashburnfirerescue.org and click on the fall open house link.

Admission is free and shuttle bus service will be provided from Cedar Lane Elementary School, 43700 Tolamac Drive, off Ashburn Road.

Grocery benefit: Here's an easy way that everyone in Ashburn can help support our neighborhood schools. Both Giant and Harris Teeter have programs that give cash rewards to schools whenever a customer with a linked customer card purchases certain products. Giant has an A+ Bonus Bucks program and Harris Teeter has a Together-in-Education program. You don't need to have children enrolled in the schools yourself; anyone can participate. If you participated last year, you still need to link your card this year. For Giant, go to www.giantfood.com/aplus or call 1-877-366-2668. For Harris Teeter, go to www.harristeeter.com and click on Together in Education.

Loudoun Chorale. The Loudoun Chorale will be singing again this year at the Waterford Fair. Performances will be held at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at Wesley Methodist Church. Admission to the concerts is free and admission to the fair is $13 per day in advance or $15 at the gate. For more information, including an entertainment schedule, visit http://www.waterfordfoundation.org.

Farmers Markets: It's fall at the Ashburn Farmers Market and you'll find plenty of locally produced meats, fruits, vegetables, baked foods and specialty items heralding the new season. The market runs every Saturday 8 a.m.-noon in the Ryan Park Shopping Center, 43480 Yukon Drive (where Home Depot is located).

Hearing rescheduled: The Loudoun County Planning Commission has rescheduled its public hearing on the proposed Broadlands Regional Medical Center. It will now be held on Oct. 15 at Eagle Ridge Middle School at 6 p.m. The school is located at 42901 Waxpool Road in Broadlands.

Christmas in October. The Ashburn Volunteer Fire and Rescue will hold a Christmas-Shopping-in-October event on Oct. 18. Articles for sale will include jewelry, candles and baskets, as well as businesses. If you are a vendor and would like to participate, call 703-729-0006.
