Bulldog girls' soccer installs Windows
Stone Bridge High School hired Joan Kelso Windows as its new varsity girls' soccer coach Sept. 21.
Windows assumes the reins of a program which owns a Group AA state title (2005) and two Liberty District championships (2006 and 2007).
"It's a successful program with wonderful girls," said Windows, who met with her players the day of her hiring. "I want to help continue that success."
Like the Bulldogs, Windows is no stranger to success. She guided River Hill (Md.) to three consecutive Group 3A state championships from 1999-2001.
She then headed up the nascent program at Hanover in 2003. The Hawks made the regional tournament in each of her two years there.
Windows commented on her general coaching philosophy.
"I'm as competitive as anyone," she remarked. "But what I want to get across to the kids is that it's about being part of the Stone Bridge community, and learning to win as a team."
Windows returns to the sidelines after a three-year hiatus from coaching. She is a third-year social sciences teacher at Freedom High School in South Riding.
"I was missing something by not coaching," Windows said. "I missed having those experiences with the kids outside of the classroom."
Previously, Windows worked as a grievance attorney for the American Foreign Service Association. She is a graduate of the University of Maryland, where she was a scholarship soccer player.
The Bulldogs were coached by Rae Ann Taylor for the 2007 and 2008 seasons.
Stone Bridge athletic director Dave Hembach said that Taylor's position was required to be posted annually as vacant because she was not a teacher with Loudoun County Public Schools.
Qualified candidates who hold Loudoun teaching positions then may be considered for the position, Hembach said.
