Game of the Week: Bulldogs aim for 7th heaven
Stone Bridge coach Mickey Thompson has a good kind of problem.
His Bulldogs are 6-0, having defeated foes by an average score of 53-11. Their 319 points scored is more than 100 better than the Liberty District's second-most prolific offense.
Patrick Thompson leads all Loudoun quarterbacks with more than 1,100 yards through the air. Daniel Allen averages more than 10 yards per carry and has found the end zone 15 times. Nick Sheehan, Michael Prince and Zach Thompson each have greater than 200 receiving yards and have combined for nine touchdowns.
Now coach Thompson must caution his troops about overconfidence. The Bulldogs are heading into what he calls the "toughest part of our schedule," starting with a visit from the Langley Saxons Oct. 10.
"I think we're playing pretty well on both sides of the ball," Thompson said. "Our defense is playing extremely well. We have a good intensity level, especially against the run."
The Bulldog run defense held South Lakes to a grand total of three yards Oct. 3. For the season, Stone Bridge has the district's stingiest defense with 67 points allowed.
But the Seahawks, at 1-5, do not present the same challenge as the Saxons, who have a playmaking All-Liberty quarterback in Danny Pritchett.
Pritchett, a second-year starter, suffered a left high-ankle sprain on the first play from scrimmage Sept. 19 against Marshall, and has not been available since. The Saxons are 1-2 during Pritchett's injury.
"They've played well when he's been in there," Thompson said. “We're preparing for him to be their quarterback.”
Stone Bridge needs to be wary of looking ahead, as a showdown with the Warhawks at Madison High School looms large Oct. 17. Madison goes against W.T. Woodson Oct. 10, with the loser dropping out of the current three-way tie for first.
Characteristically, the coach is focused entirely on his team's next game.
"We have a major contest coming up [against Langley], and they've got a lot of college-level players," Thompson said. "We need to be ready to play."
