Powell to be a Razorback

Broad Run's all-region performer Valerie Powell issued a verbal commitment to the University of Arkansas last month to become part of the Razorbacks' women's soccer program.

"I loved the campus as soon as I got there," said Powell, who immediately felt comfortable in Fayetteville's large-campus setting. "I knew right away that's where I wanted to go."

Powell considered Winthrop, Coastal Carolina and Longwood, among other schools. She will be joined at Arkansas by two teammates from her Chantilly-based travel team, the Virginia Netforce.

The offensive-minded defender, a 2008 all-region selection, is the fourth Spartan from last spring's undefeated, untied state championship team to wind up on a Division I roster. Kelly Evans will play for Old Dominion University, Caitlyn Hunter will suit up for the University of North Carolina-Wilmington, and Holly King is bound for the University of Florida.

Powell looks forward to Southeastern Conference matchups against King, one of her best friends and a partner in "being goofy" during high school.

"We think it's going to be awesome," Powell said.

Powell is the second member of her household to become a Division I athlete. Her sister, Karla, is a freshman softball player at the University of Wisconsin after helping Broad Run win consecutive state titles as a first baseman.

"They are very proud and supportive of each other," father Adrian Powell said of his daughters. He said he and his wife are undaunted by traveling to distant SEC and Big Ten locations to watch his daughters compete. "We'll still try to provide a sense of family to them," he said.

After she matriculates at Arkansas, Valerie Powell may study a field related to nursing. The star athlete finds "anatomy and physiology, and things like that, to be really interesting."
