The following incidents happened in Loudoun's public safety fields throughout the week.

Ashburn teens caught with alcohol after homecoming

Twenty teenagers are facing charges of underage possession of alcohol after Loudoun sheriff’s deputies found them at a house party in the Leesburg area early Oct. 19.

Shortly before 1:30 a.m., deputies went to a home in the 23000 block of Evergreen Mills Road after a Briar Woods High School resource officer received information of a possible post-homecoming party, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

Deputies found numerous bottles and boxes of alcohol at the house. A 17-year-old girl and a 16-year-old boy were suffering side effects from consuming alcohol and were taken to local hospitals as a precaution, Troxell said.

The teenagers, ranging from 15 to 18, are all from Ashburn and were turned over to the custody of their parents, Troxell said.

The homeowner, a 47-year-old woman, was at home at the time of the party. An investigation into how the teens obtained the alcohol is continuing, and more charges are possible.

Armed robbery

Two people were robbed at gunpoint outside a Harris Teeter grocery store in Ashburn Oct. 16.

A sheriff’s deputy was called to the area of Ashbrook Commons Plaza shortly before 11 p.m. for a report of a suspicious vehicle, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

As the deputy arrived on the scene, a man waved him down and said he had been robbed behind the grocery store.

The victim said he was with a co-worker standing behind the shopping center near a footpath when someone they didn't know approached them with a gun. Both victims work in the shopping center, Troxell said.

The perpetrator demanded the victims' wallets, then struck one of the victims before running toward a nearby apartment complex. Deputies searched but did not find anyone.

The attacker is described as a heavy-set male with a medium complexion and short hair. He was wearing a white shirt and baggy blue jeans at the time of the robbery, Troxell said.

Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to call the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations division at 703-777-0475. Those who wish to remain anonymous can call Loudoun Crime Solvers at 703-777-1919. Anyone with information leading to an arrest and indictment could be eligible for a reward of up to $1,000.

Web predator operation

A North Carolina man was charged Oct. 16 in an Internet predator operation conducted by law enforcement authorities in Virginia, Loudoun County Sheriff's Office spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

Police say Gary A. Prieb, 29, of Charlotte, engaged in an online conversation starting in August with a person he thought to be a 14-year-old female. The person was actually an investigator with the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

Prieb initiated the conversation in a chat room, authorities said. During the two-month investigation, the suspect engaged in sexually explicit conversations over the Internet and then tried to arrange a face-to-face meeting, Troxell said.

Prieb was charged with soliciting a sexual act from a minor. He is being held on a fugitive warrant in North Carolina and is awaiting extradition to Virginia.

Felon arrested

The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office arrested a convicted felon Oct. 15 and recovered four handguns and narcotics from his home.

Information received at a recent driver's license checkpoint led investigators to conduct a search warrant at a home in the 200 block of Lincoln Avenue in Sterling.

Billie G. Walker, 34, of Sterling, was charged with four counts of possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, two counts of illegal possession of felony narcotics, maintaining a common nuisance and distribution of narcotics, Troxell said.

The checkpoint netted other arrests as well, resulting in total of nine felony charges and six misdemeanor charges. A large amount of money was seized, along with crack cocaine, marijuana, heroin and ecstasy, Troxell said.

Standoff at storage unit

A man is in custody after barricading himself in a self-storage unit in Sterling for nearly six hours Oct. 18.

Loudoun County sheriff’s deputies were called to the Budget Self Storage in the 21600 block of Cascades Parkway shortly after 3 p.m. to check on the welfare of the man, spokesman Kraig Troxell said.

Employees with the storage company said the man had been living in a self-storage unit. The man was reportedly acting erratically and they were concerned for his well-being.

As deputies arrived on the scene, the man barricaded himself in his self-storage unit. As a precaution, members of the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team and the Sheriff’s Office Negotiations Unit were called to the scene, Troxell said.

After negotiating with the man for several hours, members of the S.E.R.T. team entered the unit about 9 p.m. and took the man into custody without incident. He was taken to a local hospital for a mental evaluation, Troxell said.

No charges are pending at this time.
