Briefs: Tree quarantine, coffee break, energy conservation, heard saying
Ash borer quarantine made permanentThe 90-day quarantine of ash trees and their wood in Loudoun, imposed July 21 by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Affairs Commissioner, has been made permanent by Virginia's Board of Agriculture and Consumer Services effective Oct. 29.
The quarantine affects Loudoun, Fairfax, Prince William, Fauquier and Arlington counties, and the cities within that area. No ash trees or ash wood products – except heat-treated lumber – can be moved out of the quarantine area. Foresters say the quarantine will slow, but probably not stop, the spread of the destructive beetle.

Coffee with a supervisor
Loudoun Supervisor Andrea McGimsey (D-Potomac) will be at the CountrySide Starbucks Sept. 6 between 10 a.m. and noon to listen to residents' concerns and ideas regarding the Potomac District. The Starbucks is at 3 Pidgeon Hill Drive.
Energy conservation month
The Board of Supervisors agreed Sept. 2 to declare October Energy Efficiency and Conservation Month in Loudoun County. During this month, the county will launch a program to help make residents aware of what they can do to save energy at home.
Walking tour
County supervisors plan to take a walking tour of communities in the Sterling section of Loudoun to view firsthand some of the issues brought up by residents recently.
Earlier this year, county officials held several community meetings in Sterling to get input from residents on how the county can improve the quality of life in eastern Loudoun.
Some concerns mentioned by residents included unkempt lawns, increased crime, poor connectivity between neighborhoods and a lack of community spirit.
No date and time has yet been set for the walking tour.
Heard saying ...
"We are trying to fix something that is not broken."
-- Loudoun Sheriff Steve Simpson, Sept. 2, on a failed proposal by Board of Supervisors Chairman Scott York (I-at large) to conduct a study into whether Loudoun could be better served by a police department instead of a sheriff's office. York withdrew his proposal Tuesday after seeing that a majority of other board members did not support the idea.

October (or even now) would be a great time for homeowners to have an energy audit performed on their homes. Many local utilities offer them for free.
We had one done on our home last fall and learn much about home energy conservation in general, and energy reduction recommendations for our specific home.
We have written about the report we received from the energy audit on our home on the ECOENERGY page of our home web site if folks are curious what this is all about.
With the energy audit report, we had an independent accredited professional evaluate where we were wasting money by ineffeciently consuming energy and how we could rectify the situations. It was well worth the 2 hours the energy auditor spent in our home. It gave us a plan to attach our 21 year old home's energy deficiencies rather than guessing.
