College Corner: Sept. 9
Young honored
University of North Carolina at Pembroke sophomore middle blocker Rachel Young was named to the Peach Belt Conference’s 2008 preseason All-Conference volleyball team.
Young was a 2007 PBC All-Tournament team selection after accumulating 297 kills, 79 blocks and 67 digs. She finished fourth in the PBC with a .290 hitting percentage.
Young was a two-time Dulles District Player of the Year at Heritage High School. She produced 496 kills during her final two high school campaigns.
Diamond foes again
Loudoun Valley graduate Brandon Michon and Stone Bridge graduate Sean Ryan were standouts on rival baseball teams in high school.
Michon, now playing at Brigham Young, and Ryan, at Virginia Tech, played on opposing teams this summer in the Coastal Plains League, a collegiate wooden bat league in Virginia and the Carolinas.
Michon, a left-handed pitcher, went 2-1 on the mound with two saves and a 3.00 earned run average. Michon struck out 26 batters in 30 innings pitched for the Edenton Steamers.
Ryan, an outfielder, hit .255, scored 19 runs and stole nine bases for the Outer Banks Daredevils.
Glenn shines
Redshirt freshman Terence Glenn contributed heavily in Rhode Island's 27-24 win over Monmouth in its football opener Aug. 30. Glenn, a defensive back, registered five tackles and intercepted a pass in his first collegiate game.
Glenn was the starting quarterback at Stone Bridge High School as a junior and senior. He guided the Bulldogs to the Virginia Division 5 championship game in 2005.
