Eagle football breaks losing skid

The Freedom Eagles snapped an 11-game winless streak Sept. 5 with a 22-14 road victory against Brentsville.

The win was the first for Freedom since the final game of the 2006 season.

"It was a good thing for the players, for the coaches, for everybody,” said Eagles coach Tom McIntyre, adding that his team was happy to avoid the “dirty dozen” in reference to consecutive losses.

Senior Dakota Porter delivered a stout performance for Freedom. Porter intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble from his defensive back spot on defense. The second-year varsity player also hauled in a 47-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Luke Braatan.

Running back Jeff Pugh added a pair of touchdown runs in the Eagles' win.

McIntyre said his team practiced with a spark Sept. 8 as they began preparations for their next game. Freedom is on a bye this week before playing at King George Sept. 19.

"Once you get that one, the kids get confident,” McIntyre said. “It's amazing what getting that first win can do.”
