1,000 poll workers needed in Sterling

Local election officials are scrambling to sign up enough residents to work the polls on Election Day to ensure that the lines keep moving on what is expected to be a busy presidential election day.

Dianna Johnson Price, secretary of Loudoun's Electoral Board, said polling places in the Sterling section of Loudoun – particularly Sugarland Run -- are especially in need of election officers. As of Sept. 11, she said Sterling precincts still needed 1,000 officers to work the polls Nov. 4.

Officers also are needed in Ashburn and parts of Leesburg. She said precincts in Western Loudoun are faring better than those in the east.

The requirements for becoming an election officer are that you must be a U.S. citizen and registered to vote in Virginia.

Officers have to be at the polls on Election Day from 5 a.m. until the results are called in and all equipment is packed and ready to return to the Office of the General Registrar after the polls close. However, some officers may elect to work a half-day shift.

Pay is $100 for a full day, $50 for a half day and $20 for taking part in a training session.

The Electoral Board also is recruiting students to volunteer to become election pages who will act as greeters at the polls and direct voters where to go.

"We need help to eliminate the long lines," Johnson Price said.

Also to avoid backups, she said, her officers will be employing hand-held computers this year containing information on all local registered voters. She said this technology will allow poll workers to verify that voters standing in line are indeed at the correct polling place.
