NOVA Medical offers in-depth program
Job stress has become “a common and costly problem in the American workplace,” stated a study by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and Ashburn-based NOVA Medical Group is instituting a new program to help executives deal with their stress.
“Business executives are at the biggest risk for stress-related illnesses,” said Dr. Grace Keenan, medical director at NOVA Medical. “By going to NOVA Medical Group for a checkup, business executives have access to both allopathic [or standard medicine practices] and holistic physicians.”
The new Executive Wellness Program that NOVA Medical is rolling out takes all aspects of a person's health into account during a two-day physical that comes complete with spa services and lunch.
“We want to examine people from top to bottom using mind- body medicine techniques,” Keenan explained. “The two-day model is adjusted to each individual's schedule.”
During the two-day visit -- which doesn't have to be on consecutive days -- the patient will meet with numerous specialists and go through a list of evaluations and assessments so the doctors get a clear look at the patient's health.
“It is a collaborative effort with the client to better understand their goals,” Keenan said.
The patient will have a stress-management evaluation, fitness assessment, naturopathic (or natural remedy) consultation, digital mammogram or prostate ultrasound, genetic screening and radiological testing. The patient will also have extensive lab work done – testing vitamin stats, amino acid levels and expanded cholesterol readings.
“It really needs to be a tailored approach for each patient,” Keenan said. She added that not every patient will go through every test -- only what the doctors see as necessary.
Another point Keenan focused on was the naturopathic approach taken.
“We try to use natural and less aggressive means,” she said. That being said, Keenan did say that if surgeries or standard medicines are needed, they will not be overlooked.
This tailored approach has helped for NOVA Medical client Kari Wheeler, of Fairfax, who has been working with doctors for about 15 years on ailments she has been suffering for 20 years.
One of the things Wheeler is most impressed with at NOVA Medical is the time the doctors give her – typically 60 to 90 minutes a visit.
“They gave me extra time,” Wheeler said. “Normally you get 15 to 30 minutes with a doctor appointment. It is hard to get the details, and you can't get extra information to take it to the next level.”
Wheeler cited one example of a time she spent with a doctor at NOVA Medical, saying the doctor sat down and went through a list for her medical history instead of having her fill it out. When she thought this was a little extreme, the doctor later was able to link a problem she had as a young girl to elevated numbers on test results as an adult.
“It is a total health picture, comprehensive care,” Wheeler said.
The Executive Wellness Program offers these types of visits, allowing the patient to get thorough exams.
Appointment for the program should be made two weeks in advance, and the cost is $4,000 flat fee. A patient can then submit the cost to their insurance, likely for partial coverage.
NOVA Medical Group accepts all insurance with the exception of Kaiser and Medicaid.
