Public invited to give input on public transportation plan

Loudoun County officials are holding a special workshop Sept. 24 where the public can give input on the future of public transportation in Loudoun.

The workshop will be held at Ida Lee Recreation Center Social Hall, 60 Ida Lee Drive, in Leesburg from 6 to 8 p.m.

The topic of discussion will be the county's transit plan for the next 20 years. The plan will include proposed new bus routes, hours and facilities that could enhance public transportation in Loudoun.

Sheriff's offices moving

The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Administrative Offices are moving from their current location on Catoctin Circle in Leesburg to a larger space at 880 Harrison St. in Leesburg.

The move will take place from Sept. 17 to Sept. 19. During this time the offices will be closed to the public. Residents who must obtain fingerprints or background checks during this time can do so at the Dulles South Public Safety Center at 25216 Loudoun County Parkway in Chantilly between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. on weekdays.

The Leesburg offices will reopen Sept. 22.

The Sheriff’s Office plans to move to an even larger facility on Sycolin Road several years from now. That building, when built, will enable the agency to have most of its many divisions under one roof, officials said.

Report available

Those who would like to read more about the Civil War's Battle of Unison can obtain a copy of a new federal report on the three-day battle through the Unison Preservation Society.

The society is currently attempting to have the 8-mile-long Unison battlefield between Philomont in western Loudoun and Upperville in Fauquier County included on the Virginia Landmarks Register and the National Register of Historic Places. This summer, it was awarded a $35,000 federal grant to aid in this effort.

To receive a copy of the 52-page report, society members are asking for a $25 donation to pay for printing and mailing.

Residents asked to read

Loudoun's library system is encouraging residents to take part in its annual One Book-One Community program by reading the same book.

This year the book is "Nothing But the Truth" by one-named writer, Avi. Free copies of the book, which is about a ninth-grader suspended for singing the "Star-Spangled Banner" in homeroom, are available at county libraries and at the County Government Center in Leesburg.

The author will make an appearance in Loudoun on Sept. 25 at 7 p.m. at Park View High School in Sterling Park to discuss his book. The public is invited to attend.

Dine with your kids

The Board of Supervisors Sept. 16 declared Sept. 22 as a Day to Eat Dinner with your Children in Loudoun.

According to a county report, the National Center on Addiction and Substance Abuse at Columbia University found that teens who who dine with their families are less likely to use drugs.

County leaders say the reason for the day is to raise awareness of this and to "strengthen families by bringing them together at the supper table," according to Tuesday's proclamation.
