Panthers place in top 10

The Potomac Falls Panthers led a contingent of 11 Loudoun schools with their third-place (boys) and 10th-place (girls) finishes at the Oatlands Invitational Sept. 20 south of Leesburg.

The 5-kilometer cross country meet drew 100 schools from the mid-Atlantic region and one from Colorado, competing in eight races of varying skill levels.

The Varsity A is the highest level of competition at the event, followed by Varsity B, then Junior Varsity.

The Panthers totaled 216 points in the Varsity A boys' race to finish third behind Robinson (165) and meet champion Oakton (133).

Ryan Hagen led Potomac Falls with his 16th overall finish, completing the course in 16:35.

Josh Hardin (16:53), Brian Robinson (17:16), Andrew Mott (17:21) and Alvaro Morales (17:23) also factored in the Panthers' scoring, finishing within the top 60.

Panther coach Dolph Null complimented Hagen's performance.

"Ryan Hagen was our No. 1 runner today,” he said. “Just a great overall effort."

Dominion placed 13th in the team standings, with sophomore J.T. Duke ranking 29th individually. Loudoun County finished in 15th place.

Sherwood (Md.) runner Solomon Haile, an Ethiopian native, posted the best individual boy's time of 15:25, 19 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor.

In the Varsity A girls' race, Saratoga Springs (N.Y.) easily won with five runners placing in the top 11, defending last year's title. The Blue Streaks came in to Oatlands for this year's meet with the nation's No. 6 program, according to Harrier Magazine.

Corning (N.Y.) runner Kate Rosettie paced the field individually with a time of 18:54.

Potomac Falls enjoyed the top Loudoun finish in 10th place, earning the strong placement despite the absence of top runner Christina Lee, out with injury.

Melissa Saunders (20:23), Shannon Brady (20:54), Rachel Diniega (21:10), Koeley Brady (21:21) and Rachel Hagen (21:50) were the Panthers' top runners.

"For both our boys and girls, this was our first 5K race," Null said. "I was a little anxious to see what they could do. But ... we're pretty pleased."

Loudoun County's Julie Strange (19:33) tied for 16th place overall, the highest individual finish for a Loudoun female in the Varsity A race.

Briar Woods posted a pair of top 10 finishes in the Varsity B races. The Falcon girls placed fifth as Giana Leone (20:36) finished eighth individually, and Alexa Kniley (20:50) was 14th.

Briar Woods earned eighth place on the boys' side, led by Connor Pompilio (17:36) in the 24th position.
