Vikings clinch Cedar Run golf title

By Carl Lukat

Four Loudoun Valley golfers broke 40 as the Vikings swept a nine-hole quad match with Battlefield, Stonewall Jackson and Forest Park Sept. 23 at Dominion Valley Golf Club in Haymarket. Valley clinched the Cedar Run District regular season championship with the sweep.

The Vikings totaled 153 in the match to edge Cedar Run foe Battlefield by a single stroke. Loudoun Valley was led by junior Zack Bosse's round of 37. Senior Austin Kaseman carded a 38, while sophomore Tanner Welsh and junior Brandon Deleonardis each posted a 39.

Valley’s top two golfers this season, Scott Davidson and Brian Hickey each produced rounds of 42, which did not factor in the Vikings' scoring (each team counts the rounds of only their four lowest scoring golfers).

Kaseman came up big for Valley. After five golfers were in the clubhouse, the Vikings trailed Battlefield by three strokes with Kaseman and the Bobcats' Brandon Pastor still playing.

On the par 3 ninth hole on an island green, Kaseman’s eight iron found the center of the green, while Pastor’s ball landed in the water. Kaseman two putted from there, sinking a seven-foot putt to clinch the one-shot victory.

This is Valley’s first regular season title since entering the Cedar Run District two years ago. The Vikings won the National District championship in 2006, their final year in that district.

Valley will host the Cedar Run District golf tournament Sept. 29 at Loudoun Golf and Country Club in Purcellville. The eight-team tournament tees off at 9 a.m.
