Thompson verbally commits to Wake Forest
By Carl Lukat
Stone Bridge senior quarterback Patrick Thompson will join two current and one former Bulldog teammate at Wake Forest University after verbally accepting a scholarship offer Sept. 28 to become a Demon Deacon.
Thompson will join twin brother Zach Thompson (defensive line), Mike Olson (linebacker) and former Stone Bridge running back Devon “Ylou” Brown at Wake Forest, a Division I college in Winston-Salem, N.C.
"It feels real good,” Patrick Thompson said. “Since Zach and my friend Mike committed there, I've gotten to know the school. To be able to go there, I'm very excited."
Thompson, who stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 210 pounds, was recruited as an athlete by Wake Forest. His likely college position is either outside linebacker, quarterback or h-back (combination of a fullback and a tight end).
Before leading Stone Bridge to the 2007 Virginia Division 5 championship in his first season as a varsity quarterback, Thompson was a tight end and outside linebacker as a sophomore.
Thompson said he would prefer to remain at quarterback but is more than willing to play whichever position the Wake Forest coaching staff feel is best. He's just excited to continue playing with his brother.
"That's a big deal to me,” he said of joining Zach at Wake Forest. “I've played with him my whole life. I couldn't imagine playing on a different team than him."
Patrick Thompson is the fifth of this year's Bulldog seniors to commit to a Division I college. Along with him, Zach Thompson and Mike Olson heading to Wake Forest, linemen David Wang (Virginia Tech) and Brian Slay (North Carolina State) also have verbally committed to Atlantic Coast Conference schools.
