Kaine dubbed chairman of Democratic National Committee

Though no formal announcement has been made by the governor himself, Virginia Democrats are celebrating the naming of Gov. Tim Kaine the next Democratic National Committee Chair.

Kaine will serve as DNC chair part time from Richmond until his term as governor ends in January 2010, and will take over full time after that.

He will replace Howard Dean, who has been chairman since 2005. The DNC chairman normally holds the post for a four-year term and is responsible for promoting the party and its platform and leading fundraising efforts.

The appointment of Gov. Kaine to head the DNC shows that a moderate, common-sense approach to governing is being recognized and valued at the national level,” said Sen. Mark Herring (D-eastern Loudoun), “and it will reinforce a continuation of that approach as a model for Virginia Democrats to follow.”

State Democrats are calling the appointment a big win for the party in Virginia.

The selection of Gov. Tim Kaine as chairman ... is a victory for Virginia Democrats,” said Sen. R. Creigh Deeds (D-Hot Springs), who is currently running to replace Kaine as governor in 2010. “Our success as a state party began with Kaine and Gov. Mark Warner's elections in 2001 and continues to this day.”

State Democrats attribute the party’s recent successes in part to Kaine. These victories include the elections of Sen. Jim Webb in 2005 and Senator-elect Mark Warner in November 2008, and the winning of Virginia's 13 electoral votes for President-elect Barack Obama.

Del. Brian Moran (D-Fairfax), who is also vying to succeed Kaine, has forwarded his support of Kaine saying, “This is another example of Virginia leadership helping to fix what’s broken in Washington.”
