La Voz program graduates seven
On June 25, seven people graduated from the La Voz of Loudoun Leadership and Community Development Program. The six-month program trains low-income immigrants to become leaders in the community.
Seven immigrants from four countries -- El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico and Romania -- completed the program. Participants gained confidence as well as public speaking and organizational skills.
The Class of 2009 includes Angel Cerritos, YMCA; Patricia Rosales, Faith Bible Church; Juana Garcia, Target; Jaroslava Slaninova, Ashby Ponds; Ana Hernandez, Northern Virginia Family Services; Claudia Vivas, SonaBank; Rafael Ernesto Rosales, EdCo Glass.
La Voz founders Maritza Saldana and Alicia Waning served as mentors and facilitators for the program.
The National Catholic Campaign for Human Development provided a $10,000 grant to La Voz of Loudoun through the Catholic Diocese of Arlington. The Dominion Foundation and local churches provided additional financial support. SonaBank of Leesburg and Long and Foster Realtors of Sterling donated space for meetings.
Goals of the program:
• Involving low-income immigrant leaders to participate in community planning
• Providing a voice for immigrants to identify and address community issues
• Creating a more inclusive atmosphere for immigrants in Loudoun County
