Plans under way for nonprofit center in downtown Leesburg
Loudoun Cares, a local nonprofit dedicated to developing nonprofit infrastructure, soon could have a new home.
Plans are under way for Loudoun Cares to purchase a property at 207 S. King St. in Leesburg's historic district.
If all goes according to plan, the organization will open a multitenant nonprofit center in spring 2010. At least seven local charitable organizations would be housed in the center.
Andy Johnston, executive director of Loudoun Cares, said the group needs only $200,000 to complete the $2.5 million deal that includes purchasing and renovating the building, which has not housed a tenant since January.
So far, U.S. Rep. Frank Wolf (R-10th) has secured federal funding for the project, while Sen. Mark Herring (D-eastern Loudoun) has secured state funding. Loudoun County government, local corporations and individuals also have contributed.
Loudoun Cares has been looking since 2003 to purchase a facility for a center. Johnston said the center would not only be invaluable to the local nonprofit community -- it also should benefit the Town of Leesburg, since the center will house 30 to 40 employees that will eat, shop and bank in town.
Loudoun Cares is also pursuing a potential partnership with the George Mason Enterprise Center that would bring a small business incubator to Leesburg.
“Such a partnership would facilitate the overall building renovation, be in concert with Leesburg’s downtown improvement plan and give George Mason an early and prominent presence in downtown Leesburg,” Johnston said.
