Homeless shelter wins green building award
The new Loudoun County homeless shelter will be one of the greenest new buildings in the county, and it has an award to prove it.Loudoun County selected the new shelter – under construction and expected to open in September -- as the Green Building of the Year out of 2,500 nominated projects. It will be featured in the Real Estate and Construction Review magazine.
"A few years ago, we decided to build more energy-efficient buildings and to be light on the environment," said Sandy Hunter, design manager at the Loudoun County Office of Capital Construction. "We've really been stressing that."
The building is the first LEED-certified (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) facility built by the Loudoun County Office of Capital Construction. Solar panels will provide 13 percent of the shelter's energy, and the bathrooms will feature low-flow shower heads and waterless urinals. The wall insulation will be 95 percent recycled paper, and the roof insulation will be soy-based.
The county gave the design contract for the facility to Architecture Inc. of Reston.
"I think it's just what we need to bring what we're doing in Loudoun County to the forefront of public attention," Hunter said. "If the county can't do it, why would the public feel like they'd want to build green?"
The shelter is off Sycolin Road near the youth shelter and juvenile detention center.
