Peeler commits to Pittsburgh

Broad Run High School running back T.J. Peeler verbally committed last weekend to play football for the University of Pittsburgh.

Peeler, 6-foot-1 and 205 pounds, believes Pittsburgh is an ideal program for him to translate high school success into college prosperity.

"The University of Pittsburgh is one of the best schools," Peeler said. "I always wanted to go to this school." The Panthers are a Division I member of the Big East Conference.

The rising senior rushed for approximately 1,100 yards and 18 touchdowns last year, despite missing three games with a broken elbow and sharing time in the backfield with Times-Mirror Male Athlete of the Year Breon Earl.

The highlight for Peeler and the Spartans last year was winning the program's first-ever Virginia AA state championship in December.

Peeler will play tailback in college and envisions himself as a power runner. He said his strength and ability appealed to Pittsburgh's coaching staff.

"I run my hardest every time," Peeler said. "That's what they like about me."

Peeler visited the Pittsburgh campus three times -- those visits made his decision easy.

"When I went up there, I felt comfortable around all the players and coaches," Peeler said. "I like Pittsburgh people and felt at home there."

Peeler said he was glad to have the decision out of the way so he can focus on playing for Broad Run in his senior year. Peeler likely will carry the rushing load as the Spartans attempt to repeat as state champions.

Several Division I schools recruited Peeler. He received offers from West Virginia and North Carolina State.

"I never really thought I was going to be good enough to play at a good program like this," Peeler said. "I just came to work hard every day."
