Local designer brings style to Middleburg

Walking into Wendy Pepper's studio in Middleburg, you'll see sketches on her wall and fabrics scattered everywhere.

But, once you talk to her, you'll realize she's very down to earth and lacks the ego you might associate with a fashion designer.

You would have never guessed she was a finalist on the reality TV show “Project Runway.”

Pepper said she is different than most fashion designers because she is a businesswoman first.

Her goal isn't to have a specific style that satisfies her own taste but rather what satisfies the taste of the person who will wear the garment.

“I don't want my style to wear my clients, I want my clients to wear it,” Pepper said. “My style is your style.”

Even though her clothing lines are extravagant, her own personal style comes off as simple and casual.

Although her experience on the show was life-changing and made her more known, Pepper is all about bringing the clientele to Middleburg.

With several major lines that include equestrian wear, casual wear, vintage wear and formal wear, you would not expect her to have enough time for all the charity work she does.

Right now, she is working on a project with the Boy Scouts.

The majority of jobs Pepper does are custom-made pieces and alterations. She is currently helping out some Boy Scouts by creating uniform elements for them.

She enjoys using her business and her "Project Runway" exposure to help build Middleburg's recognition in the fashion world.

Pepper's clothing is featured in local stores like Santangelo & Sandridge in Middleburg.

Her clothing will also be featured in the Middleburg store Timmie Jane, set to open next week.

Pepper strives to help her community while styling high-end garments.

Although she has a lot on her plate, she is able to balance life as a fashion designer who owns her own business while still finding time to give back.

She is glad her Project Runway experience allows her to stay in Middleburg instead of having to run her business out of more notable places in the fashion world, like Washington, D.C., or New York.

Mallory and Sophia are juniors at Briar Woods High School and Freedom High School, respectively. They participated in the Loudoun County School Business Partnership's Job for a day program Nov. 18

I had the pleasure of being invited into Wendy's studio today with a student that I work with at Briar Woods as the job coach, for part of Loudoun County Job for a Day Program. She welcomed me and my student warmly, answered all kinds of questions, and showed us what a truly talented designer she is, all while giving some very needed advice and guidance to the student. If you're looking for something special, go and find Wendy Pepper in Middleburg!
