Discount grocer ALDI will land at the Broadlands Village Center in Ashburn later this year, taking over the space formerly occupied by Safeway.

“Saul Centers is excited to announce that @AldiUSA will be joining the Loudoun County community at Broadlands Village Center in 2017,” Saul Centers real estate group tweeted Friday.

Founded in Germany in 1961, ALDI is known as the first discount grocer in the world. In the U.S., there are more than 1,600 stores across 35 states.

The Broadlands store will be ALDI's second location in Loudoun County; the other is located on Route 7 in Sterling.

Broadlands Village Center is situated just off the Dulles Greenway and Claiborne Parkway.

The comments here are exactly what I expected of you, Ashburn residents.

Aldi is horrible because you have to either bring your own bags or buy their bags. This store only caters to broke people trying to save pennies on shopping bags or greenpeace nuts thinking they are saving the world by reusing bags (only to jump in their car to get home).

I don’t get the appeal of Aldi, I really don’t. It’s kind of a meh grocery store with limited options.

If Big Lots opened a grocery store it would look exactly like ALDI.

With Lidl opening just across the street, that will make for some interesting competition.
