An Ashburn man who fled the country in 2017 after being charged for the sexual assault of a juvenile was apprehended Tuesday in Cambodia, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office.

In December 2016, the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office received a report of a sexual assault case involving Samuel D. Lovejoy, 31. The investigation determined the suspect sexually assaulted a juvenile he knew. On Jan. 6, 2017, he was arrested by the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office on two counts of sexual assault of a victim under the age of 13.

Lovejoy, of Ashburn, was released by a Loudoun County magistrate on Jan. 10, 2017 on a $25,000 secured bond. Following his release, investigators found he fled the country on Feb. 15. He was subsequently indicted on charges of indecent liberties of a juvenile and felony failure to appear in court.

Detectives with the LCSO Special Victims Unit (SVU) worked with the FBI, the U.S. State Department, the U.S. Marshals and the U.S. Customs and Border Patrol to attempt to find Lovejoy. He was located in Cambodia and arrested during the early morning hours of Jan. 9 by the Cambodian General Department of Immigration.

Lovejoy is now in custody pending extradition back to the United States.

This is so awful that this jerk caused so much heartache to a family- an evil man and I am judging because this is true unfortunately - he should go to jail for the rest of his life.

@Lexus — Gone Girl story? So you’re claiming that this is a deceptive and malicious accusation to frame Lovejoy? Are you serious? Let the justice system prevail in this case. An innocent man does not flee to Cambodia. You’re correct about one thing and I concede — I don’t know the facts and evidence so I should not pass judgement in this case. However, I strongly stand by my sentiments towards child abusers.

I hope you are never falsely accused of such heinous accusations and have to be subject to the broken system. This is actually a real life Gone Girl story.

For all you internet trolls: you might want to understand the facts and evidence before passing judgements. One day you will be judged on your judgements.

I say handcuff him and make him swim back. There is no crime more unforgivable than hurting the most innocent and vulnerable. Anyone who abuses, molests or tortures a child should be sentenced to death.

I say leave him in jail in Cambodia for a long while before bringing him back.
