Part “biker bar,” part pit house, The Q Company has a short menu but a big passion for Texas barbeque.

With burnt orange painted walls and a long line at the takeout counter in the back, Q is bustling on a Saturday night: families and couples fill the tables, booths and the stools at the copper plated bar.

The Q may just do a handful of things, owner Mitchell Matzek says, but they do them really well. After 10-plus years of working on recipes for large volume Texas style barbeque, Mitchell and his wife Sara Matzek started off quietly on Leesburg’s Catoctin Circle with a soft opening in September, but soon followed with a grand opening Nov. 17.

“We chose Leesburg because we live nearby, it was a logical choice,” Sara Metzak said. “We also have a young daughter and we have long felt that the restaurant we wanted to open needed to be part of the community. We needed to choose a community that we can also raise our daughter.”

In 2010, the Metzaks were cast in Food Network’s “24-Hour Restaurant Battle” and won as “The Q Company.”

“It was a great experience and one that we will always remember as the catalyst to our getting the restaurant open,” Sara Metzak said. “When some of the best chefs in the country tell you ‘I don’t know why you’re not already doing this’ ...well it’s a kick ... to get it done.”

Dinner starts with complimentary fluffy and sweet cornbread. Brisket, pulled pork and spicy red sausage are prepared West Texas style (dry smoked with a J&R smoker) and served the Central Texas way with a slice of thick, Texas Toast (diners can also choose by the pound or as a sandwich).

The beef and baby back ribs are impressively meaty, prepared by the pound with a great smoke flavor. Sauces are all over the map with Carolina mustard, North Carolina vinegar and a sweeter traditional barbeque. For families, ordering one of the packages (i.e. family style) is the best way to go.

The specialties include all of the good things mixed together: the BBQ Baked Potato is topped with pulled pork, beans, coleslaw and Texas red sauce. The BBQ Sundae (the only “dessert” reference you will find on Q’s menu) is basically the baked potato specialty without the potato.

The bar serves three draft beers (including Shiner Bock and Flying Dog Raging Bitch) canned craft brews and some local wine.

Although you won’t find anyone complaining about the minimalistic menu, Sara Metzak said they are revamping it to offer a few new items.

“Hand wrapped jalapeno cheese sticks with a raspberry chipotle sauce, fried okra and a few other new items and adding platters and other combinations to allow for better selection,” Sara Metzak explained.

Except for tweaking the menu, Sara Metzak said they have hopes of building a larger mobile presence at events, fairs and for businesses.

“Leesburg has a lot going for it and we feel that we can eventually call it our ‘hometown,’” Sara Metzak said.

Sounds good will have to try it out. I have not found a mind blowing place in the area yet and most places are Carolina in style not Texas and if there are two things Texas got right is BBQ and Chili.

I would pay an extra buck or two, to be served with real plates and tableware.  Aside from that, full steam ahead.

The food at The Q Company is DEElicious!  It is the best BBQ I have ever had - the beans, beef and baby back ribs are my favorite but the cornbread alone is worth the trip!
