It has been a relatively quiet first couple of work sessions and public hearings for the Loudoun County School Board as they embark on settling new attendance zones in the Dulles South area for the new Cardinal Ridge Elementary scheduled to open next school year.
It has been a lengthy and taxing process for members of the School Board the last two times they were tasked with realigning attendance zones.
In 2011, Leesburg went through the rezoning process for the new Frederick Douglass Elementary School. That decision was made and ultimately went to court.
In 2012, Ashburn and Dulles North went through their own lengthy process.
There are currently six elementary schools already in the Dulles South.
With four sessions already completed, there are currently two plans being offered: Base Plan X and Base Plan O. Two of the four meetings have been public hearings with a combined three speakers.
Base Plan X has current students from planning zone DS07.4 moving to Buffalo Trail Elementary.
Planning zones DS02, DS03, DS12, DS12.4 and DS13.5 will move to Cardinal Ridge from Buffalo Trail.
Buffalo Trail would also lose DS13.2, DS17.5 and DS19 to Liberty Elementary, DS14.8 to Little River, DS13.7 to Pinebrook.
At Liberty Elementary, Planning Zones DS12.5, DS13.6, DS14.1 and DS14.2 will move to Cardinal Ridge Elementary.
Little River's DS02.1 would also move to the new school.
At Pinebrook, several zones would be on the move. Zones DS09.1, DS09.2 and DS16 would go to Cardinal Ridge. Zones DS14.4 and DS16.2 go to Hutchison Farm Elementary and Zones DS09.3 and DS16.1 change to attend Liberty.
Under Plan X, it is estimated that only Aldie would be over capacity, but only by four students.
Base Plan O has the same zone from Aldie Elementary moving to Buffalo Trail.
Buffalo Trail Elementary would see the most turnover in the number of attendance zones.
Planning Zones DS02, DS03 and DS12.4 would move to the new school. DS13.5 goes to Hutchison Farm and DS13.2 and DS17.5 switch to Liberty.
Zone DS14.8 goes to Little River and DS07.9 moves to Pinebrook.
Liberty would lose Planning Zones DS12.5, DS13.6, DS14.1 and DS14.2 go to Cardinal Ridge, where they will be joined by DS02.1 from Liberty and DS09.1, DS09.3 and DS16 from Pinebrook.
Pinebrook would also lose DS16.2 to Hutchison Farm Elementary and DS09.2, DS14.4 and DS16.1 to Liberty Elementary.
According to Loudoun County Public School officials, this plan would also only have Aldie Elementary over capacity for the 2014-15 school year.
The next work session and public hearing will be held Nov. 5 at the LCPS Administration Building at 6:30 p.m.
