Fire in Loudoun County’s ‘Data Center Alley’ causes $150K in damage

Times-Mirror/Alexander Todd Erkiletian
Saturday's fire at a data center under construction in Ashburn caused an estimated $150,000 in damage to the structure.

The fire, according to Loudoun County Fire and Rescue, occurred on a roof in the 21000 block of Sir Timothy Drive and was accidental due to a space heater, used to keep roofing materials warm overnight, being placed too close to combustible materials.

Fire and rescue units from Moorefield, Ashburn, Lansdowne, Leesburg, Kincora, Sterling Park, Cascades, South Riding and Fairfax County responded around 8:30 a.m.

There were no injuries.

The facility is owned by Digital Realty.

golden, you sound like the foreman overseeing this accident that could have been prevented. Why two piles if 1 space heater caused this fire? Both flames look to be about 10 yards away from one another.
I hope Insurance doesn’t cover it so contractors take on expense. Using a space heater outside, just not a good idea. Guess we’ll see more roof fires since this must be the norm for data centers(or none will be constructed during cold winter months).

cowbell - If you look at the first picture you will see the two piles burning. How do you know they were not going to be used within the next day or two?

so they had 50-100 space heaters for the roofing materials(I doubt 1 would throw off enough heat). Probably not a good idea to have them delivered so early and put on roof if freezing weather would compromise them…Inside would still be warmer even without heat.

Cowbell - The roofing materials are dropped off by crane on the existing portion of the roof. They are very heavy and not easily moved. The building is under construction and there is not heating throughout.

Wow, using a space heater to keep roofing materials warm overnight. Why not move the materials inside?

We don’t need no water let the…

The roof, the roof, the roof is on fire…
