Virginia is tied for the fifth lowest gas prices in the nation, according to a recent AAA Mid Atlantic report touted by Gov. Bob McDonnell on Aug. 26.
According to the AAA report, the average price for unleaded gas in the commonwealth last week was $3.36 per gallon, approximately 24 cents less per gallon from one year ago.
McDonnell tied the statistics to the historic 2013 transportation funding reform passed by the General Assembly. A provision in the law changed Virginia's cents-per-gallon gas tax to a wholesale tax.
“After nearly three decades of gridlock we came together this year and passed a historic bipartisan transportation funding solution which reduced the tax on gas, and now motorists are seeing the results at the pump,” McDonnell said in a prepared statement. “Our bold action on transportation means that new road, bridge and rail projects are underway across the Commonwealth. Virginians are spending less on gas and will soon be spending less time stuck in traffic.”
