‘Hero Hilltop’ returns to Sterling

The Rotary Club of Sterling is back with its 'hero hilltop' near The Bungalow Lakehouse and Route 7 in Sterling, where more than 230 American flags have been placed to honor local heroes.

“It brightens up the eastern part of Loudoun County,” event co-chairman John Tattersall, CEO of the Sterling-based Tattersall Financial Services, said. “When you come around from Cascades Parkway onto Route 7, it just floors you.”

Each flag on the hill represents an individual who is a hero to someone who lives or works in eastern Loudoun. While most of the heroes are veterans of military service, the flags also recognize those who haven’t served in the military, including parents, guardians, teachers, mentors, spouses, co-workers, first responders—or any individuals known for their selfless acts on behalf of others.

The flag “garden” is on display until Nov. 13. Benches are placed on the hill so visitors can sit while they spend time at the site. Each hero will be recognized with a medallion bearing their name attached to the pole of the flag that honors them. When the display closes, the medallions will be given to those who sponsored the flags.

The Rotary Club of Sterling offers sponsorships for the flags to help fund its work in the community, particularly the scholarships and programs the club offers for local high school students.

You can support the project at any time while the flags are flying by purchasing a sponsorship for a hero of your own. A single flag sponsorship is available for $50. A Red, White & Blue sponsorship, available for $250, funds multiple flags. Sponsorship details are available online at sterlingrotary.org/flags-for-heroes.

The Rotary Club of Sterling holds weekly meetings at 12:15 p.m. on Mondays at The Bungalow Lakehouse. The sessions focus on items of local interest and feature a guest speaker. New members and other interested parties are welcome to attend.
