Located off Route 9 in Hillsboro, Loudoun's newest vineyard, Kalero, will host a grand opening event July 15 with comedian Jason Weems, wine pairings from Notaviva Vineyards and fare from Parallel Wine & Whiskey Bar's food truck.

Kalero Vineyard is a 131-acre farm in the heart of western Loudoun's wine country and is home to "Heartstone Barn," named in honor of a heart-shaped stone found on the property by the owner's twin daughters. The property was bought in 2015 by Francis and Ann Fortin.

Francis Fortin has always dreamed of growing grapes and said he has fallen in love with farming.

"I told him to plant an acre on our property and try it out, knowing full well he wouldn't enjoy farming based on his ‘efforts’ in my own garden plot. Well, I couldn't have been more wrong. He fell in love with farming," Ann Fortin said.

When the Potts family farm became available, they purchased the property with a plan to plant at least 25 acres of wine-producing vines.

The farm also includes an old stone house – which has not yet been renovated – and a stone barn. There is a cornerstone on the original structure marked 1834.

Originally, the plan was to convert the barn into a winery. Halfway through the process, the decision was made to turn the barn into an event venue, and the grapes will be sold to local wineries.

"We really wanted to make sure we could actually make great wine before we started selling it. This year we are going to make some small batches and see where it leads us," Ann Fortin said.

The Fortins hope the current trend of "rustic, yet elegant" and "barn chic" will make their venue attractive to wedding couples. They participated in Visit Loudoun's wedding tour this year, and hosted an event for Loudoun Ballet Performing Arts Company in June.

Kalero has several weddings booked for this year and will host the Loudoun Ballet Performing Arts Company's Denim and Diamonds 40th Birthday Gala Sept. 9.

Address is 36140 Charles Town Pike Purcellville, VA 20132.  It’s beyond Hillsboro, and does not appear to be in their jurisdiction, so I think it is in the County. What is their zoning? Are all these uses by-right, and/or did they get the requisite zoning permissions, and the development permits to do these uses, events, etc.? These are the things Loudouners are interested in :-).
