Loudoun schools plan to open on time Thursday

Loudoun County Public Schools announced Wednesday afternoon that all facilities plan to open on time Thursday.

Because the weather forecast is uncertain as of Wednesday afternoon, this may change to a delay or full closure, officials said. Should the status change, staff and the public will be notified as soon as possible.

During periods of extreme cold temperatures, the LCPS weather team monitors risks associated with exposure to cold temperatures as a part of an established process for winter weather events involving snow and ice, Assistant Superintendent for Support Services Kevin Lewis said in an earlier statement.

The weather team monitors the National Weather Service publications as well as other sources of information such as meteorologists’ telecasts, web services and direct communication with county and school system transportation and facilities representatives across the region.

The combination of precipitation, temperature and wind are evaluated with respect to how the combination affects school operations. Each factor contributes to the condition of the public roadway network, campus travel ways, utilities and school building heating systems.

Depending upon the confidence in forecasts, LCPS may make decisions in advance of the school day or early in the morning in time for parents and service providers to respond accordingly. LCPS recommends parents download the LCPS mobile app for a convenient way to monitor any weather-related announcements.
