Leesburg man sentenced to four years in malicious wounding case

A Leesburg man was sentenced April 11 to four years in prison for seriously injuring another man with a broken bottle.

Judge Stephen Sincavage sentenced Zama Silindane, 21, to four years incarceration with an additional four years of suspended time, meaning Silindane could return to jail for four years if he violates his probation.

On Dec. 7, Silindane was involved in a verbal spat between two groups of men at a Sterling McDonald's. During the arguing, Silindane went to his car, grabbed a glass bottle and then went back to the restaurant where he hit another man in the face. The bottle shattered and the glass severed the man's nose. After Loudoun County Sheriff's Office deputies responded, Silindane said he was "kind of tipsy."

The victim's injuries required surgery, and he still suffers from breathing and nasal problems, according to the Loudoun Commonwealth's Attorney's Office. In a victim impact letter he wrote to the court, he noted that he has trouble going out in public, both because of fear and because he's self-conscious about his appearance.

Though Silindane had no criminal history, Sincavage said that Silindane had "a moment of reflection and elected to come back and escalate the situation with an innocent victim rather than call the police or try to break up the altercation."

In addition to prison time, Silindane must also pay $5,451.50 in restitution to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Fund, which will be used to help pay for the victim's medical expenses.
