Loudoun residents express fear, anger with law enforcement over KKK activity

Bishop Shawn Stephens speaks before the crowd of a Jan. 23 NAACP meeting in Leesburg about renewed KKK activity. Times-Mirror/Veronike Collazo
When Bishop Shawn Stephens of Ignite Kingdom Church got home last week, someone was throwing things out of a car. Since newspapers often get thrown on driveways, he didn’t think much of it until he picked it up and saw it was a flier advertising the Ku Klux Klan.

When his wife and daughter saw the flier, his daughter asked if it was still safe to walk the dog — something she did every night. He said she should not have to feel this way living in Loudoun County.

“I felt threatened. I felt like intimidation was used,” Stephens said. “I did not feel like we were targeted but I did feel like we were threatened.”

It was this fear and anger that hundreds of Loudoun residents shared at last night’s Loudoun NAACP meeting, along with a willingness to do more.

Loudoun residents received KKK fliers denouncing Martin Luther King Jr. Day just before the holiday, as well as recruitment fliers in the fall around Halloween. Law enforcement officials said that while they were disturbed and disgusted by the fliers, they must operate within the limitations of the law.

Though technically no crime has been committed, residents say they're afraid this is just the first step and the worst is yet to come. Loudoun NAACP President Phillip Thompson shared a report with the Times-Mirror indicating that murders by white supremacists doubled in 2017. He said findings like this is why he and the NAACP are concerned about any renewed KKK activity.

The Loudoun NAACP constructed a panel of law enforcement leaders to explain what law enforcement can do in these scenarios. On the panel sat Leesburg Police Chief Gregory Brown, Loudoun Commonwealth's Attorney Jim Plowman (R), Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman (R), Virginia State Police Captain James De Ford and Purcellville Acting Police Chief Joe Schroeck. Special Agent Keith Palli, a civil rights investigator for the FBI, also answered questions and addressed concerns.

Brown said LPD officers proactively collected hundreds of fliers before residents woke up after receiving 18 reports of the KKK fliers this time around, and they are doing all they can to investigate who is behind the distribution. Chapman said LCSO is doing the same, and all are working with federal counterparts on the issue.

Legally, however, there is not much law enforcement can do. The fliers are a form of free speech, and at most the distributors could see littering charges if caught.

However, finding someone guilty of the misdemeanor would require someone report the incident and witness it, which can be a high burden of proof, De Ford said. He encouraged residents to be vigilant and take down as much information as possible if they see something.

Still, residents were frustrated at what little law enforcement has been able to do, especially since the KKK recruitment materials were not classified as a threat despite being perceived as such by historically marginalized groups.

“If my neighbors are being invited to a party to plot against me, that is threatening,” Lovettsville resident Ayala Sherbow said.

Leesburg resident Bill Fox said though he is one of the biggest First Amendment advocates, he agrees that the fliers were threatening.

“Whoever was handing out these fliers knows that there’s African-Americans in the community. They know there’s folks who are Jewish in the community,” Fox said. “They’re throwing them out there indiscriminately. They know they’re threatening the community. They know there’s members of the community who will be threatened by these fliers.”

Fairfax NAACP President Kofi Annan said for those looking for more legal penalties for hate groups, House Bill 1601 in the Virginia House of Delegates is attempting to criminalize domestic terrorism under Virginia law. This could restrict the fundraising, marching and organizing of groups like the KKK, as well as penalize supporters of the group.

If passed, the bill could set a precedent in dismantling groups like the KKK, Annan said. He urged members of the community and law enforcement leaders to support this bill.

Brown, the Leesburg police chief, said local law enforcement has been monitoring groups and individuals tied to white supremacist groups to make sure there is not threat to the community.

Sheriff Chapman also shared some of the proactive work LCSO does in working with faith and community groups to learn of issues, monitor situations and hopefully prevent crime. Techniques like this have helped Loudoun have the lowest crime rate in the metropolitan region, Chapman said.

Several community members came up with ideas on how to tackle the root issue, such as cooperation within the faith community, creating events about racial tolerance and solidarity and initiatives that support and encourage education such as multi-cultural grants.

Plowman said it’s important not to magnify the KKK’s message and instead have events like this that show the community is not susceptible or accepting of the KKK’s message.

Rabbi David Greenspoon of Congregation Sha'are Shalom in Leesburg criticized any dismissal of the KKK fliers as ignorance or nonsense, saying being able to dismiss the fliers is a form of privilege.

"If we've learned anything in our history as Jews, from the time of Esther and Mordecai to the time of right now, is that when people say, 'We're coming after you,' we don't ignore that and call it ignorance," Greenspoon said.

Thompson said that while the majority of residents may not agree with the KKK or the White Knights of the KKK, which distributed the fliers, if people don’t speak out, these groups then believe that there is a silent white majority that agrees with them.

Residents were adamant that the community and all of its leaders must speak out against hatred and racism.

Note that Amerigirl doesn’t dispute that Trump risked his own capital and increased his wealth through capitalism. Sometimes he lost money as is the case when you risk your own money. Nice litany of one-sided versions but you simply cannot deny 1) Trump created wealth through business and 2) the Clintons (not unlike career Senator Harry Reid) became rich through kickbacks and corruption. We are not talking about amassing $1M by the Clintons but rather $100M’s (Reid has a similar stack of $ created by corruption). Trump also increased the wealth of others else they would not have chosen to do business with him.

The tax law benefited nearly every Loudoun citizen and American. More jobs are being created and Americans are keeping more of their hard-earned money. Why in the world would any tax cut be designed to hurt folks who make America thrive. The pie can get larger and lift all boats. Maybe you should hope for success for all including the lower-skilled blue collar workers whose wages have been depressed by rampant illegal immigration in the past.

Virginia SGP Do not lie saying I said I was a Clinton expert. Trump didn’t make his fortune by kickbacks, the new tax bill is a kickback to real estate investors. Though a lot of his money was made on the backs of workers he did not pay for services. When he tore down the Bonwit Teller building to make way for the Trump Tower, he had about a dozen union house wreckers on the site and about 150 Polish workers, all of them illegally in the country, who he paid $4 to $5 an hour and who did not have hard hats. And Trump claimed in a lawsuit that he had no idea that these workers were there in any way other than an appropriate way. And a federal judge mocked him, pointing out that they were easy to spot because they were the ones who had no hard hats.  He has let people think that he fixed Wollman Rink in Central Park for free. He was paid $10 million, but some of his contractors were never paid, because he told them this was a public service project. In 1982 a woman named Cody countersued for $20 million and in court papers accused Trump of taking kickbacks from contractors, asserting this could “be the basis of a criminal proceeding requiring an attorney general’s investigation” into Trump. Trump then quickly settled, paying the woman a half-million dollars. Trump said at the time and since then that he hardly knew those involved and there was nothing improper his dealings with Cody or the woman. Funny how he suddenly doesn’t admit to knowing people who he has had close contact with.
Donald Trump often portrays himself as a savior of the working class who will “protect your job.” But he has been involved in more than 3,500 lawsuits over the past three decades — and a large number of those involve ordinary Americans, who say Trump or his companies have refused to pay them. Examples of these hard-working Americans are a dishwasher in Florida, glass company in New Jersey, carpet company, plumber, painters, 48 waiters. Dozens of bartenders and other hourly workers at his resorts and clubs, coast to coast. Real estate brokers who sold his properties. And, ironically, several law firms that once represented him in these suits and others.
New Jersey Casino Control Commission in 1990 show that at least 253 subcontractors weren’t paid in full or on time, including workers who installed walls, chandeliers and plumbing.
In the interview, Trump repeatedly said the cases were “a long time ago.” However, even as he campaigns for the presidency, new cases are continuing. Just last month, Trump Miami Resort Management LLC settled with 48 servers at his Miami golf resort over failing to pay overtime for a special event. The settlements averaged about $800 for each worker and as high as $3,000 for one, according to court records.

amerigirl and equity would have you believe that leaving $1-2T of retained earning offshore somehow benefits low-income American workers.  Say what?

amerigirl and equity would have you believe that the Clintons became $100M’s-aires because of “hard work” and not because of receiving kickbacks and “speaking fees” for individuals and companies who needed access to the highest policy makers in the gov’t.  Say what you want, Trump didn’t make his fortune by kickbacks for giving out political access.  Exactly what business did the Clintons run?  Please tell us Clinton-expert amerigirl.

All Americans benefit when the pie is larger.  They benefit when you keep a larger % of your own income.  Whereas skilled immigrants actually have a higher rate of job creation (via starting businesses) than native-born Americans, unskilled immigrants have a much lower rate.  That, amerigirl, is why Democrats and crony-capitalist Republicans have stuck it to the blue collar workers via their open border policies.  The crony capitalists do it for pure $$ (they may pay higher social transfer taxes but their personal gains more than outweighs those costs largely born by the middle class).  The Democrats do it purely for future votes.

I realize the Dems are apoplectic that the economy and the stock market are on fire.  Cheer for a recession guys.  You will need it to regain political control.

“...Trump in the White House because he would. . . sell favors to the elite”  and “would never let those Dreamers flood (HIS) upscale cocktail parties” at maralago or access to golf courses.

convenient for trumpistas to forget last 50 YEARS of southern strategy -  republican party electoral strategy to increase political support among white voters in the South by appealing to racism

1950s-60s - civil rights movement and dismantling of jim crow laws, nixon & goldwater strategized & contributed to realignment of white, conservative voters to republican party

1968-1972 republican party served as “vehicle of white supremacy in the south”

2005 - republican national committee chairman ken merman apologized for exploiting racial polarization to win elections

Virginia SGP, Loudoun asked who supported Trump, I answered. Trump advocates the interests of the RICH in the US. Now you are an expert on Clinton? You do know she lost right? Who do you think has more upscale parties, Clinton or Trump? What is the gist of that statement, totally off the mark.  Lorella Praeli, (dreamer) worked for Clinton despite not being able to vote. So blue collar workers don’t want competition, what makes you think that professional workers, like typical programmers, analysis, health care workers want their wages lowered by competition?
Tell me more, what policies that favor workers rather than politicians who sell favors to the elite. I see him giving advantages to corporations, and them paying him and other repubs off. Examples: Dan Eberhart, Koch brothers, the Mercers, the Uihleins,  John Ricketts, and Sheldon Adelson.

Trump4, Once again the platforms of the two parties reversed each other in the mid-20th century, due in large part to white Dixiecrats’ flight out of the Democratic Party and into the Republican Party after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.” Keep up with history, blaming dems before that time is like blaming repubs. Byrd also said that joining the KKK “the greatest mistake I ever made. Byrd explained that he was a KKK member because he “was sorely afflicted with tunnel vision—a jejune and immature outlook—seeing only what I wanted to see because I thought the Klan could provide an outlet for my talents and ambitions.”[22] Byrd also said in 2005, “I know now I was wrong. Intolerance had no place in America. I apologized a thousand times ... and I don’t mind apologizing over and over again. I can’t erase what happened.”

Just because the Crusader backed Trump and was correct with their pick for President that is not enough of a reason to get a subscription.

Associating a candidate to who supports them is an obvious logical fallacy.

If accurate, one could say that because communists, felons, and Hollywood assaulters support Hillary Clinton, she supported them as well.  Is that what you are truly suggesting amerigirl?

For a refreshing change, Trump advocates the interests of the US.  This includes the interests of blue collar workers who are not inclined to have an unlimited supply of low-skilled workers illegally immigrate to compete with them for jobs.  The reason wages have stagnated is because of that supply.  Voters are not idiots.  Thus, the midwestern states understood their own interests and put Trump in the White House because he would enact policies that favor workers rather than politicians who sell favors to the elite.  Hillary would never let those Dreamers flood her upscale cocktail parties but she is willing to let them undermine blue collar wages simply to get more votes.  That is treasonous.

Crusader the most prominent newspapers of the Ku Klux Klan officially supported Trump.

Loudoun4Trump Dems hate who? Be specific. It’s not the people that they are trying to get covered by Medicaid expansion, or the dreamers. They do tend to hate racist.
The KKK was indeed made up largely of Democrats in the South after the Civil War, as most whites in the South were Democrats, but it was not started by the party. Historians say the KKK and its founding had nothing to do with the “modern Democratic Party.” PolitiFact looked into the accusation when it came up in 2013 and called it false. In addition, the modern Democratic and Republican parties are not what they were in the 19th century. Here is a quote from their findings
“The party lines of the 1860s/1870s are not the party lines of today,” Carole Emberton, an associate professor of history at the University at Buffalo, told PolitiFact. “Although the names stayed the same, the platforms of the two parties reversed each other in the mid-20th century, due in large part to white Dixiecrats’ flight out of the Democratic Party and into the Republican Party after the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.”

arbie—“Whom did white supremacists support for President?”  white supremacists supported Woodrow Wilson, FDR (his whole cabinet was chock full of racists), Wallace, LBJ, Byrd….these are confirmed political leaders that had ties to kkk or white supremacy…oh, and they are all democrats…

I am dealing with the NOW….the hate still exists in the democrat party, just directed at a different group of people….that’s all the Dems have—divide america to get elected—its all about power, dems could care less about anyone, they just need the vote every two years or so…

I’m amused at some of the comments here, particularly those confusing the Klan with the “alt-right.”

The Ku Klux Klan (KKK) was the militaristic arm of the Democratic Party. It’s founder was a Democrat. Surely posters here are aware of this.

“If they really believe in the trash they are promoting why are they afraid to talk to their neighbors face to face.”

This is an interesting and valid point coming from someone who uses a screen name to hide their identity.

Call John Wick.

amerigirl, I think you are confused.  It becomes increasingly more difficult to lower the unemployment rate the closer you get to “full employment” (historically considered to be 5.0-5.5%).

For black unemployment, the Dec->Dec drop had slowed to just a 0.6% drop during Obama’s last year.  That pace accelerated to a drop of 1.1% during Trump’s first year in office down to 6.8% unemployment rate. A significant achievement.

The same goes for Hispanic unemployment.  During the last 2 years of Obama’s term, it only dropped from 6.4% to 6.2% (drop of 0.2%) then to 5.9% (drop of 0.3%).  During Trump’s first year, that drop accelerated to a 1% drop down to 4.9%.

So while interest rates do provide a large (if not dominant) influence over the business environment, business confidence is also a major player.  It is indisputable that businesses are bringing jobs back to the US due in no small part to the corporate tax rate changes.  No idea where you get your data but many companies are planning on relocating businesses from Mexico who now have a tax rate 9% higher than the US (30% vs 21%).

Businesses make decisions based on their forecast of the future including excessive regulations.  The business confidence index varied between 99 and 100 for most of Obama’s term including a high of 100.8 in Oct-2014 and ending at 100.3 when he left office.  That number has spiked to 101.3 today, a number not exceeded since 2004. Many liberals predicted the economy would go into a recession with Trump.  Just the opposite has happened.

Finally, numerous regulations have been rescinded, delayed or scrapped by the POTUS and/or the Congressional Review Act (law passed/signed).  These include:

  - expanding state flexibility to define essential health benefits (why not let states control these)

  - fast-tracking gene and cell therapy approval

  - fast-tracking small natural gas exporters

  - expanded drilling in continental shelf

  - rescinded new test procedures on air conditioners that were deemed inaccurate

  - repealed stringent rules requiring employers to report activities discussing whether to unionize

arbie, white supremacists may wish to marginalize minorities but they don’t control anything.  Let them speak.  Liberals talk nonsense too but nobody would ever consider silencing them.  Folks will just ignore it.

Amen - Not a snowflake

If anyone can find a group of KKK members here in Loudoun, I will gladly join the alt-left to help run them out of America.  All I ask is please find them, but don’t try to paint all other good citizens like your group does.

No cindylou, what I have asserted in the past is that I feel it is highly unlikely that we have a “KKK” problem in LoCo.  I stated before, I would bet my 401-k that these fliers either came from a troubled teen(s) in need of attention or someone intentionally trying to stir up the community.  I, like many others, have six motion activated cameras surrounding my house.  It is only a matter of time before someone is identified.

If anyone can find a group of KKK members here in Loudoun, I will gladly join the alt-left to help run them out of America.  All I ask is please find them, but don’t try to paint all other good citizens like your group does.

Loudoun4Trump. Stop the politics and stick to the facts of NOW. Dwelling on how or why the KKK was founded is not the Point. You constantly bring this up. Try sticking to the issues not to the politics.

It is interesting how everyone rushes to conclusions when things like this happen.  I remember how everyone was so outraged when the colored school was damaged and then when we actually found out who did the damage there was no one saying maybe I was wrong when I jumped on conclusions.

Everyone is is quick to say this side is horrible and that side is horrible without ANY facts in this current case.

It really is a shame people are unwilling and unable to place blame until we know what really happened.

Let me help clear up the mystery Debbie.

We have a handful of cranky old white men who sit around the house, hate anyone not like themselves, love to yell at the TV, spend a lot of time cruising the popular alt-right fake news sites, then come here—like dogs drawn to hydrants—and put their “mark” on every story.

There are a few things I’d like to point out that nobody in these comments in mentioning:

1. The primary recruiting demographic for the KKK these days would be low income people from rural areas or small towns.  So does it really make sense that they’d be distributing fliers in a highly-educated, affluent suburb in a major metro area?

2.  Nobody has actually seen these mystery men that are placing the fliers.  No surveillance video, photos, or even a vague description.

3.  Its easy to see from past LT articles that the Loudoun NAACP is DESPERATELY trying to become relevant in a county with relatively few racial problems.

I’m not going to say anything else.  Just think about those points and draw your own conclusions as to what’s really going on here.

Virginia SGP, Just because unemployment numbers are down for certain minority groups in the last year doesn’t mean that those decreases are due to actions initiated in the last year.

If you seriously don’t believe that white supremacists and the like aren’t marginalizing minorities, I don’t know what else to tell you.  And that’s just one tiny example.

debbbie, I would have to say to them that they are cowards, that their actions are the same as a drive-by. If they really believe in the trash they are promoting why are they afraid to talk to their neighbors face to face.

Virginia SGP economists have attributed the dropping unemployment rate to Yellen’s decisions keep low interest rates, these lower unemployment rates are expected after a period of prolonged economic growth.
1)Unemployment among black Americans has been declining pretty steadily after coming close to 17 percent in 2011, unemployment numbers for black Americans have fallen relatively for the past several years. By the time Trump entered the Oval Office in January 2017, the black unemployment rate was at 7.8 percent. So, it went down 1%, no biggie, the previous year, it fell 1.5 points. The year before that, it fell 1.8 points. So, he is behind the curve. It had the same effect on Hispanic unemployment rates, they have been falling for years.
Trump can’t be attributed with those numbers, you would have to credit Obama since the numbers really started to fall at the beginning of his 2nd term. I would like to know what opportunity Trump is giving the average joe, not corporations? The jobs that came back were coming back anyway(GM). The ones he said were going to stay in the country left(Carrier), and 93,000 U.S. jobs have been lost due to his foreign trade. Trump likes to say he is doing that are not happening. What are the ridiculous hurdles that he stopped for businesses? Do you mean things like lowering the EPA standards and deregulations that protect us? Being poisoned by poorly regulated food, water and air quality might make me a little richer, but definitely not raise my or my kid’s quality of life.

SkoaldudeVA, Wallace’s pro-segregation policies during his term as Governor of Alabama were rejected by the mainstream of the Democratic Party, which is why he ran as the candidate for the American Independent Party. You also have to remember that Lyndon Johnson, a democrat signed Kennedy’s, another democrat, Civil Rights Bill in 1964. Wilson was also a Southerner and although he did look hopeful when first elected, he did not align with the mainstream democrats. But as far as the KKK goes, I don’t believe that their philosophy lines up with either party. I have never known a Democrat or Republican that agrees with the thinking of the KKK. I’m not sure what all the history has to do with what is happening in Leesburg today.

Jonathan Erickson, CHIP expired in October, with a temporary inefficient funding extension until March, it officially ended over 100 days ago. The republicans, who were holding it hostage, kicked it down the road, even though an agreement had already been reached to fund it, so they could use it as a bargaining chip. When they passed the budget, they added in more cruelty to those in the program by removing the funding, that had been agreed upon, from the clinics they use which could cause many of their doctors to be laid off and nowhere for them the CHIP users to go.  Yes there is a need for a budget, why was it being delayed? What excuse is there for not passing one? Are there going to be more delays after this one? It’s not like they didn’t know when it was due!

Btw, what did the fliers say?  I don’t browse over to their site and it appears the fliers were not reprinted in the story.

If it’s just criticism of MLK, then all of this is overblown.

If it calls for violence (genocide), then it is likely illegal.  Given the statements of the police, this sounds unlikely.

If it calls for other policies (restricting immigration by race), they may be offensive to some, but hardly something citizens need to be protected from.  It’s not like this content is going to significantly influence others to change their minds.

The KKK has a terrible history but I am unaware of any violent acts since the 1960’s (correct me if I am wrong).  So why exactly are folks concerned?  The distributors of these fliers may make fools of themselves but it is hardly something to block or even get worked up over.  Does anyone have any evidence that any group (e.g. KKK) is going to take action to deny citizens their rights or hurt them?

I don’t have an answer to your question, debbbie, but I agree with the sentiment on the first part of your comment. The comments on this article a prime example of where we stand as a country.

The article is about anger over KKK fliers on MLK day, and somehow it’s devolved in partisan insults of Democrats vs Republicans, conservatives vs liberals….you people are unbelievable.

Ah, yes, “Freedom of Speech.”  Coveted and (ab)used by so many.  Great tool until you don’t personally agree with it.  Tit-for-tat, goose & gander, etc.

All I see and hear from Republicans is how Liberals are violent, crazy and racist?  Republicans are perfectionist at gas-lighting, pure perfectioin!

and not a snowflake, pursuant to your remark…
“Is this the way you treat everyone you don’t agree with?!  I did not agree with everything Obama, Bush(s), Clinton, or Reagan did either, but still respected my neighbors opinions.”

So your saying African Americans should not be angry or upset and KKK fliers should be respected in Loudoun county?  Wow.

First of all to keep this KKK in the news your all giving them free advertising.  LET IT GO!  To LTM lets have some proof ” Loudoun NAACP President Phillip Thompson shared a report with the Times-Mirror indicating that murders by white supremacists doubled in 2017” just becuase he shared a report doesnt mean its true.  Lets share the source of said report.  I do not agree with the KKK but as the LCSO stated they have rights just has NAACP has rights, Jehovah Witness that that come to your door and actually knocks on your door and hands you fliers.  yes they are a horrible group but again they live in America and have rights!  A man in Loudoun Co recently flew a flag for Robert E Lees birthday only to find it torn down, a box put in his mailbox that said your heritage is a lie, your flag comes down.  Reported to LCSO and was told kids playing a prank.  Now you tell me how is this not WORSE than the KKK fliers.  Does his family need to be frightened.  Putting a box in a mailbox is against the law if the USPS didnt do it.  I didnt see any of this reported by anyone at LTS!

If anyone thinks that Obama had anything to do with how the economy is doing now is detached from total reality. Your 401K and portfolio are going up due to deregulation and tax cuts. Those are 2 things that aren’t even in Obama’s vocabulary. Get a clue!

Jonathan Erickson, CHIP has always been reauthorized as soon as it was going to expire until the right kicked it down the road last Oct. to use as a bargaining chip, instead of using the legislation that both sides had already agreed on.

Skoaldude is correct in history….I hope somebody catches this person(s) and holds them accountable…BTW LBJs language was atrocious when he was in the WH, that brings us to the 70s, Harry Reid and Bill Clinton’s comments about Obama were also awful…those people are still in the D party last time I checked, although with diminishing standing….

Opinions are OK, everyone has them and they all stink.  It is when one tries to act on some of those opinions when the wheels come off the wagon and we descend into the darkness.  I think we all agree that the Klan has a history of acting on their zanny opinions and we as in the citizens of Loudoun need to say we have enough internal foolishness and fools (comments on this site prove that 100%) and that we don’t need their hate and violence.

@cindylou boo!

Really?  Arguing about trump, stock market, dems, repubs, etc..  This article is about a despicable act by person(s) who have no basic sense or understanding we are all human beings.  I’m curious-  if you had an opportunity to talk with the person(s) who did this, what would you tell them?

I agree with Decay, the alt-left has completely disconnected from reality and is unhinged by a man in the White House.  I am simply baffled by the venom and hatred that exists Loudoun.  Is this the way you treat everyone you don’t agree with?!  I did not agree with everything Obama, Bush(s), Clinton, or Reagan did either, but still respected my neighbors opinions.

The only “facism” in American is coming from the “alts” calling others racists, Nazis, sexists, xenophobe’s, etc, etc, etc, that are trying to stop public discord on all things they don’t agree with.

Grow up people!

It’s Amerigirl, yikes. When government can bribe us with our own money it is gloomy. DACA is future democrat votes. Chip was held hostage by democrats with their shutdown, got to have some sort of a budget.

amerigirl - please get your history right. The Dems certainly supported racism and the KKK in 1915 and well into the 1960s as the party of George Wallace. As I’m sure you know, Woodrow Wilson was quoted in “Birth of a Nation” stating that “at last there had sprung into existence a great Ku Klux Klan, a veritable empire of the South, to protect the Southern country.” Wilson’s racism is well documented. But yes, the Democrats today are not the same as they were in 1915, or 1960 for that matter - on that you are right, but your dates are wrong. The so-called “shift” of the Democrats that arbie mentions occurred far later than you think, and likely more for votes in response to the ‘southern strategy’ than a sudden determination that they were not inherently racist themselves.

With that cleared up, the distribution of these materials in our county is abhorrent. Hopefully just the result of a few morons with no legitimacy trying to stir up trouble.

AND, The FBI should be called in to find these terrorists that are doing these fliers!!!  Anyone on these comments that is defending this and making excuses needs to be looked at also!  Can you imagine???  “When his wife and daughter saw the flier, his daughter asked if it was still safe to walk the dog — something she did every night. He said she should not have to feel this way living in Loudoun County.”    Is this really what making America great is about?  It needs stopped now, today, right now!!!

amerigirl, the stock market (S&P) averaged a 10% annual gain since the beginning of 2010 through Jan 2017.

Since Trump took office the S&P jumped 22% alone between Jan-Jan.  Or ~26% if you go back to the election in Nov.  Or over 28% from the election till now.

Do you consider 28% equivalent to 10%?

HA!  Sterlinglocal and Loudoun4Trump don’t think there are any KKK in Loudoun county they want to know where they meet for proof and (of course it’s all fake news)  everything negative about Trump is (fake news). Let’s see, all Trump supporters say is fakes news, educate yourself and Democrats are violent and crazy. That’s the exact same thinG Hitler and all his supporters said and that folks is how Hitler exterminated 6 million people purging the humans he thought were worthy of living.  Trump and this administration is the most dangerous thing that has ever happened to America. Overturning every good thing Democrats did for the environment, the children, the elderly, the animals and humanity just because the “Democrats” did it.  I thought Trump was suppose to only go after bad illegals?  They are sending back people that have been here for 20-40 years that are good humans and letting the gangs here.  (they don’t check into immigration every 6 months)  I voted Republican for 2 past presidents.  Trump is the antichrist.

Loudoun4Trump—you offer not even a kernel of truth in your blather.  Rather, you are the one who has swallowed hook line and sinker the factually incorrect notion that the Democratic party primarily sustains the KKK from the Civil Rights era through the present, or that the Democratic and Republican party platforms have remained static over the last century plus.  It is you who apparently knows nothing of history, and you even double down when shown the gaping flaws in your argument.  You can’t just ignore verifiable historical facts such as the defection of pro-KKK conservative southern Dixiecrats from the Democratic party to the Republican party several decades ago.  You can’t just ignore today’s circumstances, under which white supremacists fit solidly within the right wing of the Republican party.  Or, at least, you can’t get away with this magnitude of intellectual dishonesty in the company of reality-grounded, critically-thinking adults.  Whom did white supremacists support for President?  It sure as heck wasn’t anyone from the Democratic party.  Use your brain.

Loudoun4Trump, stock market comeback really? The market has been going up since the middle of Obama’s presidency, back then Trump called it an inflated bubble that was going to burst.

Virginia SGP, that is a lie, that the KKK is just talk. And it isn’t just the KKK, it is the ult-right. A recent government report shows that from Sept. 12, 2001, to Dec. 31, 2016, there were 85 deadly attacks in the United States by violent extremists. Most of the attacks were carried out by far-right violent extremists, resulting in 106 deaths.
From stabbings on trains, to shootings in temples, and churches.  Nobody wants a Dylann Roof or MS13 or any gang for that matter, but there are laws against killing retired (what??) people and assassinations(again what???) and if there is a bill against domestic terrorism why wouldn’t it also cover gangs? I’m having a problem following you, I couldn’t find anything on the bill, could you explain?

arbie says conservatives continue to “marginalize” minorities.  Let’s consider the facts:

1. The black unemployment rate is now 6.8%.  That is a full percent below the rate when Trump was elected (1/8 lower than the 7.9% at the time) and the lowest rate for over 45 years (BLS data only appears to go back to 1972)

2. The Hispanic unemployment rate is now ~4.8%.  That equals the lowest rate over the last 45 years as well (one month in 2006 had 4.8%) and is a full percent lower than when Trump was elected (1/6 lower than the 5.9% at the time).

You see, all Americans basically want the same thing.  Opportunities to make better lives.  Trump is giving it to them.  He’s giving them more of their own money.  His policies are bolstering the economy, bringing jobs back to the US, reducing the flood of unskilled labor that keeps wages low, and reducing ridiculous hurdles for businesses.  This leads to jobs for everyone and a higher quality of life.

I will admit we have real problems in Loudoun that virtually none of the Democrats discuss.  The Commonwealth’s Attorney arbitrarily prosecutes whomever he wants and hides the demographic data from the public.  Vote out Plowman.

The schools keep ineffective teachers in the classrooms destroying some students chance at having a successful career.  Vote the school board out.

Schools are often zoned by race and SES (see Sterling/Algonkian) and neither Title 1 funds nor local funds find their way to the students that need more support.  Vote most of the school board out.

The BOS gives its massive revenue surpluses to rich foundations like Waterford or gives 9% raises to well-paid teachers rather than buying body cameras and giving raises to our law enforcement personnel.  If they BOS doesn’t change its priorities, vote them out.

I realize the doom and gloom predictions have spectacularly failed to be borne out and the Left is apoplectic that the US is booming.  Learn to accept the good times.  Go spend some of that Trump stock market rally on a good Merlot (as all good Dems do when discussing how the common folks are so ignorant) and be quiet, for just a few weeks.

4, The Klan of 1867started by the Democrats was completely different than the Klan revived in 1915. This country does not hold the same beliefs that they held back then either. A very misleading statement. If Dems love power more than people why are they the ones worried about DACA and CHIP, or did you just mean rich white people?

arbie, I realize the truth hurts…you have taken the bait hook line and sinker from the same people who said the market would crash if Trump was elected…educate yourself in history please.

Trump Causes Truth Decay - Don’t let the door hit you where the good Lord split you.

Loudoun4Trump, you really need to prioritize educating yourself and stop the blame-the-democrats game when it comes to the KKK. Have you really not by now heard of the Southern Strategy, or Dixiecrats, or the shifting political party alliances around the time of the passage of the Civil Rights Act?  Are you seriously claiming that TODAY the KKK is being supported by TODAY’S Dems more than TODAY’S Repubs?  You sound infinitely silly.

Dems aren’t trying to divide anyone.  They simply recognize that certain marginalized communities deserve better treatment, while conservatives insist on continuing to marginalize them.

A little bit of hate goes a LONG WAY.  There’s no room for hate whether we’re black or white, male or female.  Whether we’re good people or bad people, republican or democrat….JUST “SAY NO” to hate and every act that defines it.  No need to stir the pot and eventually MORE hate over someone else spreading that disease.  Rise above it.

The insanity of comments here has cured me of commenting.  Deleting my account.  Good bye all.

That bill, 1601, is pretty clearly unconstitutional.

It’s odd that while the KKK is just talk, there are real domestic terrorist organizations here now (MS-13, 18th St. gang) who clearly perpetrate more violence on both minorities and non-minorities alike.  We couldn’t get such a bill when the gangsters were killing retired citizens walking in the early morning hours or conducting assassinations in downtown Leesburg, but our politicians will push it now that some people are offended by speech.

Maybe if they change the wording a little, it could pass muster.  But as it stands now, any person giving any support to an organization with Bill Ayers as a member (who committed multiple violent acts in the past meant to intimidate),  would be guilty of a crime.  That ain’t constitutional folks.

The goal of the KKK is like any other terrorist group. They use fear as their weapon. Don’t be afraid, use technology against them.  Setup an outdoor camera on your mailbox and catch the license plate of their vehicle or a person’s face and you can be certain they’ll be in handcuffs the next day.

The KKK, founded by Democrats, has been a scar on America…I hope the pain the Democrats have caused will subside over time, but the way Democrats always want to divide voters by race, religion, gender, social class, sexual orientation, I doubt it will occur any time soon. Unfortunately, the Dem’s love the power more than the people…
