Officials from Loudoun County and Gangneung City, South Korea signed a Sister City Friendship Agreement Wednesday, formalizing the partnership approved by the Loudoun County Board of Supervisors in 2014.

Loudoun County Board of Supervisors Chairman Scott K. York (R-At Large) and Gangneung City, South Korea Mayor Choi Myeong-hee signed the agreement which calls for cooperation in various fields such as economic development, culture, clean energy, education and technology.

“We are excited about the possibilities that this friendship agreement will bring. Because of our similarities and Gangneung City’s interest in developing tourism, Loudoun County will serve as an excellent model for them as they prepare to co-host the 2018 Winter Olympics,” said York in a prepared statement.

A delegation of officials from Gangneung City is in Loudoun this week, meeting with local officials and touring the area.

Loudoun County also has sister county/city relationships with the county of Main-Taunus-Kreis, Germany; the city of New Taipei, Taiwan; Goyang City, Korea; Karsiyaka Municipality, Izmir Province, Turkey; and Shunyi District, China. These partnerships promote economic, cultural and student exchange programs.
