Jacqueline Badger Mars, the billionaire co-owner of candy company Mars Inc., has been charged with misdemeanor reckless driving following an Oct. 4 crash that claimed the life of a Huntsville, Texas woman.
Mars is scheduled for an 8:30 a.m. hearing Dec. 5 in Loudoun County District Court, according to Heather Williamson, spokesperson for the Loudoun Commonwealth's Attorney's Office.
Mars was the driver of a 2004 Porsche SUV that hit head-on a minivan carrying six passengers. The crash occurred on Route 50 near Briar Patch Lane in Aldie.
Irene C. Ellisor, 86, was taken from the scene and died at a local hospital. Three occupants of minivan suffered serious injuries in the crash.
“As court proceedings begin, Jacquie’s thoughts and prayers remain with those who have suffered injury and loss. She regrets this tragic accident,” Mars' attorney, Kent Jarrell, said in a statement.
Mars ranks No. 15 on Forbes 400 list and No. 36 in billionaires worldwide. Forbes listed her net worth at $20.5 billion.
