Mt. Defiance’s spacious new cider barn in Middleburg opens this weekend

Middleburg’s Mt. Defiance Cidery and Distillery will open its new cider barn on Saturday, beginning with a ribbon cutting ceremony at 11 a.m.

Currently, Mt. Defiance offers their ciders and spirits in their small store and tasting room at 207 W. Washington St. in Middleburg. The new cider barn is an 8,400-square-foot facility a short walk up the street from the distillery.

“I always wanted to have a farm cidery, and especially a farm cidery in Middleburg,” founding partner Marc Chretien told the Times-Mirror. “The storefront was our proof of intention, but the cider barn has always been a part of the plan. And now we plan on at least doubling our current output with the new facility -- more than doubling, actually.”

The barn will have a large cider tasting room, event space and all of the cider production facilities. The tasting room will offer tastings and sales of hard cider, sweet vermouth and apple brandy, and addition to glass and bottle options, patrons will be able to purchase cider in a refillable growler to go. The front porch will have rocking chairs and tables for patrons to enjoy the view, and a small heirloom cider apple orchard and the distillery's absinthe herb garden are also on the site.

Distillery tastings, sales, and production will continue at the original tasting room, a former service station re-purposed for Mt. Defiance when they opened in 2014. There, folks can taste and purchase the distillery’s white, amber and dark rums, sweet vermouth, absinthe, and their amaretto, almond and cassis liqueurs.

“I hope everyone will come out,” Chretien said of the opening festivities this weekend.

Mt. Defiance’s new cider barn is located at 495 E. Washington St., Middleburg. Hours for both the cidery and distillery locations are Tuesday-Sunday, noon to 6 p.m.
