National Air and Space Museum holding annual open house

The Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, part of the Smithsonian Museums, will be hosting an open house March 28. Visitors will have a chance to see what goes into restoring, preserving and displaying America’s aviation and space treasures and tour areas usually off limits to the public.

Activities will include: exploring the Mary Baker Engen Restoration Hangar; visiting the exhibits workshop to learn how exhibitions are designed and fabricated; going inside a collections storage room to learn about how artifacts are stored, cared for and moved from one museum location to another; touring the Emil Buehler Conservation Laboratory to explore the science behind artifact preservation and care; and visiting the National Air and Space Museum Archives to learni about the museum’s newest archival materials.

The event will take place from noon to 7 p.m. Admission to the museum and open house is free. Parking is $15.
