Lothar Erbe and June Bush of Purcellville's Lothar's Butchery are gearing up for a busy year in 2018, as they prepare to celebrate their 10th year in business and compete in the World Butcher's Challenge in Ireland.

Erbe was selected to be part of the six-member Team USA, made up of the best butchers in America. This is the first time the U.S. will be sending a team to the competition.

The group met in August for the first of several three-day rehearsals before they head to Ireland next March.

“I was honored to meet all of these team members. They are experts in their craft and have to perform as a team to break down a half side of beef, full pork, lamb and chicken using traditional techniques. It is like a combination of the Olympics and Iron Chef for butchers,” said June.

In addition to preparing for this prestigious competition, Lothar's Butchery & Gourmet Sausages has recently expanded offerings in its Main Street Purcellville store and re-branded with the help of local graphic designer Stilson Greene.

“We are very pleased with our new look,” said June, “and Lothar and I believe it speaks to our clientele. We are committed to quality product - sourced from local producers, then butchered and made into delicious cuts, bacon and sausages by a world-class master butcher who just happens to be my husband.”

Since 2008, Lothar's has been providing preservative-free, high-quality handmade German-style sausages. They also offer high quality preservative-free meats such as beef, lamb and pork in expert cuts by Erbe.
