Residents can download concealed handgun applications online starting Feb. 25

Loudoun County is streamlining the process for residents to apply for a concealed handgun permit.

To apply, residents can print out an application on the Virginia State Police website at http://www.vsp.state.va.us and click on Forms & Publications and then click on Firearms. On the site is a downloadable version of the application for a concealed handgun permit. The application can also be downloaded from the Clerk of Circuit Court website at http://www.loudoun.gov/clerk. Click on Concealed Handgun Permits on the left-hand side of the home page to obtain the application.

The change will take effect Feb. 25.

In the past, residents were required to go to the Clerk of Court's office inside the Loudoun County Courthouse and other various law enforcement locations to obtain an application for a concealed handgun.
Applications can still be picked up at the courthouse, but allowing the documents to be downloaded online speeds up the process, according to Loudoun County Sheriff Mike Chapman, who worked with Circuit Clerk of Court Gary Clemens on the endeavor.

"I am happy to work with the Circuit Clerk of the Court to streamline and expedite the concealed permit process," Chapman said in a prepared statement. "Gary Clemens and I are always looking for ways to improve service to the community."

“I value the partnership and collaboration with Sheriff Mike Chapman and his leadership team as together we are attempting to provide better services to our citizens,” Clemens added in the statement. “Streamlining the application process for the concealed handgun permits is just one of several ways we are teaming up for the benefit of our residents.”

Residents can still pick up an application at the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Administrative Office, 880 Harrison St., Leesburg; the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office Dulles South Station, 25216 Loudoun County Parkway, Chantilly; the Loudoun County Sheriff's Office Eastern Station, 46620 E. Frederick Drive, Sterling; or the Office of the Clerk of the Circuit Court, 18 E. Market St., Leesburg.

The application must be filled out in black ink and residents are asked to take the document to the Clerk of the Circuit Court’s Office to complete and/or file their applications. Residents must also provide their driver's license and proof of training for new applications or permit renewals.

The fee for the application process is $40.50. Credit card, cash and check payments are accepted. The Clerk of the Circuit Court does not accept packets after 4 p.m. It takes up to 45 days for the application to be processed by the court.

Editors note: The headline has been corrected to say applications can be downloaded. We regret the error.

Fix the story LTM…...

I got my CHP over two years ago, and I downloaded the application at that time.  I did not have to the Clerk of Court’s office to pick up an application.

Umm.. that title is wrong.. you CAN’T download your permit online..  shm.

The headline is misleading. You will not be able to download a handgun permit. You will only be able to download an application for a permit.

C’mon, Crystal Owens. The headline for this article is both misleading and inaccurate. I sincerely hope that ignorance or incompetence are to blame and that you did not intentionally participate in fear mongering. Fact: Beginning on Feb 25th 2013, residents will be able to download an application only, not a concealed handgun permit.
