Times-Mirror adds media veterans to the ranks

Two veteran journalists and news executives joined the Times-Mirror Monday as the newspaper's top editors.

Dale Peskin takes over as editor-in-chief from John Geddie, who stepped down from the position last week. Mr. Geddie had served as editor for the past three years.

Mary Peskin takes over as special editor with additional responsibilities for news operations, content development, design and special sections. She also assumes the duties of Crystal Owens, who will return later this year following maternity leave.

Mr. Peskin has managed news operations at The Dallas Morning News, The Detroit News, Rochester (N.Y.) Democrat & Chronicle and Warren (Ohio) Tribune Chronicle. He directed a news-industry think tank and more recently founded and operated We Media, a Reston-based media consulting group that provides innovation strategies, products and services for news enterprises.

Mary Peskin is a former executive with the New York Times Regional Newspaper Group. More recently she served as associate director of the American Press Institute, advising and training publishers and editors.

I would like to see the two new news executives reinstate the print Faith page that was discontinued last year. The Church has a great presence in Loudoun County.

Also not mentioned in the story is what John Geddie will be doing, but he has worked long hours and done a heck of a job in the last couple of years since joining the newspaper. Best of luck to John!

I read this article several times and didn’t see an answer to the obvious question—Are Dale and Mary Peskin husband and wife? Brother and sister? Not related at all?

If they were hired as a team, their relationship is part of the story, albiet perhaps not part of their jobs. That’s a pretty significant part left out of the story.

Welcome to both!

P.S. A previous editor used to have “coffee meetings” where members of the public could meet members of the editorial staff and ask questions. I hope the Peskins consider some variation of that concept.
