VDOT cuts 678 jobs

The Virginia Department of Transportation issued layoff notices to 678 workers Jan. 4. The layoffs will be effective in April. VDOT previously had cut 950 jobs in different rounds in 2009. This final round of layoffs includes the closure of 15 residency offices and will leave VDOT with 7,500 employees. Cuts were initiated last year in an effort to reduce a $4.6 billion shortfall.

Rates reduced

Rates for Dominion Virginia Power customers were reduced effective Jan. 1, 2010, in accordance with changes approved by the Virginia State Corporation Commission. The monthly net decrease in the electric bill for the typical residential customer using 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity will be 87 cents, or 0.8 percent, from $109.23 to $108.36.
