Visit Loudoun awarded $12K state grant

Visit Loudoun was one of 37 recipients of the Virginia Tourism Corporation’s Marketing Leverage Grant program’s latest round of disbursements, Gov. Bob McDonnell’s office announced Monday.

Loudoun’s primary tourism marketing organization secured nearly $12,000 in the state grant.

The funds from the commonwealth – paired with an approximately $23,500 match from Visit Loudoun and its partners – will go toward Visit Loudoun’s photography and videography program.

Patrick Kaler, president of Visit Loudoun, said the new imagery initiative will generate photos and video content for use in her entity’s marketing campaigns.

“The images and video produced through the program will provide Visit Loudoun with updated aspirational imagery to promote Loudoun as DC’s Wine Country, generate much-needed imagery for the Visit Loudoun photo and video libraries, and target several market segments and travel demographics including, leisure travelers, groups, and international travelers,” Kaler said.

The towns of Leesburg and Middleburg both chipped in funds to match the grant.

Certain content acquired through the program will serve as the the primary marketing assets used to promote Loudoun as a destination, according to Kaler.

Overall, $543,000 in grants were given to tourism-related groups across the commonwealth to create web sites, signage, social media marketing and advertisements..

“Grants such as these enable our localities to more effectively market themselves to potential visitors,” Gov. McDonnell (R) said in a prepared statement. “When more visitors come to Virginia the commonwealth and the localities realize increased tax revenue, businesses prosper and new jobs are created.”

In 2011, tourism generated more than $20 billion in state revenue revenue, supported 207,000 jobs and provided more than $1 billion in state and local taxes, according to McDonnell’s office.

The latest round of grants from the Virginia Tourism Corporation maxed out at the $50,000 awarded to the Wytheville Convention and Visitors Bureau. Other top grantees included the Shenandoah Apple Blossom Festival, the Smyth County Tourism Association and Friends of Southwest Virginia.


Curious how they come to those tourism $$$$? Does a person visiting here on business count? And why did Loudoun only get $12K?

Wow, $12,000.  It probably costs LoCo twice that to hire staff and administer the grant.
