VSP warns of Inauguration traffic congestion

The Virginia State Police has communicated the following information regarding potential traffic problems during the 57th Presidential Inauguration scheduled for Monday, Jan. 21.

While crowds are expected to be less than in 2009, the VSP is still warning of a significant addition to the region’s traffic.

Given anticipated crowds, the VSP has suggested mass transportation as an alternative as traffic delays may be significant. For information on Metro and public transportation access, click here.

VSP suggests that commuters verify that their car is prepared for traffic delays and have adequate fuel. In case of extended delays, drivers are asked to also ensure that they have extra food, water, medication and have emergency items like extra blankets and a cell phone charger.

Memorial Bridge will be closed to all but pedestrian traffic beginning at 5 a.m.

I-395 will be closed at 9 a.m. on Monday. HOV lanes will re-open southbound after the inaugural address.

Remaining open
Key Bridge, Chain Bridge, Woodrow Wilson Bridge and American Legion Bridge will remain open to all traffic.
North Washington Street at Montgomery Street to Reagan Airport will remain open.
