Wintry mix hits Northern Virginia, Loudoun
The snowfall was followed by a wintery mix that transformed into freezing rain.
According to the National Weather Service in Sterling, snowfall varied throughout Loudoun County, reaching 3 inches in Middleburg as of the morning of Dec. 9.
To top it off, most areas received just less than an inch of ice, according to National Weather Service spokesman Andy Woodcock.
“Ashburn and Arcola received a quarter of an inch of ice apiece. Middleburg got an eighth of an inch,” Woodcock said. “Leesburg and CountrySide received a tenth of an inch.”
Due to the inclement weather, Loudoun County Public Schools were closed Dec. 9. The Loudoun County government was open, but on an unscheduled leave status.
Downed trees and power lines caused power outages and traffic issues throughout the morning rush hour.
Dan Genest, a spokesperson with Dominion Power, said Leesburg was fortunate compared to other places regarding this storm.
“Leesburg missed the brunt of this storm,” Genest said. “Loudoun County has 637 customers without power due to down lines, trees and other issues.”
Priscilla Knight, spokesperson for NOVEC, noted their Loudoun customers have largely not had to deal with power outage issues.
“Loudoun only has 35 customers out of power, but we have all of our crews out and we brought in crews from Tennessee and other contract crews are working,” Knight said.
In addition to the Dec. 8 storm, the National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for the D.C. metro area for Dec. 10.
Woodcock said no new information was available.
According to the NWS website, there is a potential for 5 inches of snow in the forecast.
The watch calls for the storm to begin near dawn Dec. 10 and go through the afternoon.
Both NOVEC and Dominion are preparing for more power issues.
