With Comey’s firing, Ashburn resident Andrew McCabe takes control of the FBI

James Comey is out as FBI director, and Ashburn resident Andrew McCabe is in – for now, anyway.

With Comey's headline-grabbing firing by President Donald Trump Tuesday, McCabe, the FBI's deputy director, is now in control of the Bureau.

It's unclear how long McCabe will stay in the position, however. The FBI hasn't formally announced an interim director, and the White House said in a statement the search for a permanent new director will begin immediately.

President Donald Trump (R) said Comey's firing was necessary to restore “public trust and confidence” in the FBI. Comey has come under intense scrutiny in recent months for his role in an investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton’s email practices, including a pair of letters he sent to Congress on the matter in the closing days of last year’s election.

The new acting director, McCabe, previously served as assistant director in charge of the Washington Field Office, according to the FBI. He began his career as a special agent in 1996.

McCabe's succession to Comey isn't the first time he's found his name splashed across media outlets. McCabe's wife, Jill, ran for the Senate of Virginia in the 13th District against incumbent Sen. Dick Black in 2015. Following her defeat, Republicans pointed to the fact that Andrew McCabe played a role in investigating Hillary Clinton's emails, alleging political favoritism by Mr. McCabe.

According to an FBI statement last year, Andrew McCabe “played no role, attended no events, and did not participate in fundraising or support of any kind [for his wife's campaign].” The statement continued, “Months after the completion of her campaign, then-Associate Deputy Director McCabe was promoted to deputy, where, in that position, he assumed for the first time, an oversight role in the investigation into Secretary Clinton’s emails.”

Mr. McCabe has spent the bulk of his career in counter-terrorism and weapons of mass destruction investigations and operations.

The firing of an FBI director is exceedingly rare, according to the Associated Press.

Democrats immediately slammed the move, comparing it to President Richard Nixon’s “Saturday Night Massacre” decision to fire the independent special prosecutor overseeing the Watergate investigation, prompting the resignations of the Justice Department’s top two officials.

“This is Nixonian,” Sen. Bob Casey (D-Pa.) declared on Twitter.

“Outrageous,” said Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon), calling for Comey to immediately be summoned to testify to Congress about the status of the Trump-Russia investigation

Trump has ridiculed the FBI investigation, as well as concurrent congressional investigations, as a “hoax” and has denied that his campaign was involved in Russia’s election meddling. In his letter to Comey, he asserted that the FBI director had informed him “on three separate occasions that I am not under investigation.”

Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) called the firing “shocking” and “troubling.” He echoed Wyden's call for an update on the Russia investigation, saying it's “vital our ongoing investigation is completed in a credible and bipartisan investigation.”

“The administration insists there’s no ‘there there,’” Warner said, “yet President Trump has so far fired the acting Attorney General, nearly every U.S. attorney, and now the director of the FBI. In addition, this President’s choice for Attorney General has been forced to recuse himself, and the National Security Advisor has resigned as a result of undisclosed contacts with Russian officials.”

Virginia Democrats weren't the only ones calling for an independent investigation.

Republican Congresswoman Barbara Comstock said the Russia investigation “must continue.”

“Both Democrats and Republicans attacked the FBI Director at various times for various reasons and called for his ouster. However, I can’t defend or explain [the firing] or timing of the firing of FBI Director James Comey. The FBI investigation into the Russian impact on the 2016 election must continue. There must be an independent investigation that the American people can trust,” Comstock said in a prepared statement.

If you’re a Trump supporter (or what I’d call a traitor to America), you were probably among those who thought Obama was overreaching and discredited the presidency.  But you are OK with a President who managed to:

• accuse a former president, without evidence, of an impeachable offense

• employ top aides with financial and other connections to a hostile foreign power

• blame the judiciary, in advance, for any terror attacks

• call the media “the enemy of the American people”

• demand personal loyalty from the F.B.I. director

• threaten the former F.B.I. director

• accept foreign payments to your businesses, in possible violation of the Constitution

• occupy the White House with the help of a hostile foreign power

• intimidate congressional witnesses

• allow White House staff members to use their personal email for government business

• neglect to fill thousands of crucial federal government positions for months

• claim, without evidence, that millions of people voted illegally

• fail to fire high-ranking members of your national security team for weeks, even after knowing they lied to your vice president and exposed themselves to blackmail

how does mccabe story differ from this conflict of interest - sen. mcconnell, who should serve as check on executive branch, shilling for wife to fill the swamp?

Very interesting timing of the 500k payment which McCabe did not disclose on his financial statement to the FBI as he should have, three days later Clinton was found innocent of her e-mail scandal and no charges were coming….and the FBI wants people to think they are above board….ZERO credibility, drain the swamp and fire McCabe immediately - he should have carried Comey’s bags on his way out the door too…

To be thorough in your reporting, please indicate that the main reason for the concern about Acting Director McCabe is the $500,000 that Governor Terry McAuliffe’s PAC gave to his wife Jill for her campaign.  He is put in charge of investigating Hillary Clinton’s email when a close confidant of the Clintons, Terry McAuliffe, is donating a large sum of money to his wife’s campaign.  That is thorough reporting but never mentioned in the article.

I just provided (what I believe to be reliable) factual numbers. Just trying to lessen the jerking of knees. I defend neither Trump, Clinton, or Nixon. Of course, every event has its own circumstances, you can’t 1:1 compare things unless you can clearly say it’s a 1:1 comparison. Rage on friends!

Seems many of the commenters want a politicized FBI.  I don’t.

So in defense of Trump you are citing Clinton? Gah.

Reagan and Bush did not remove all the US Attorneys in 1 day like Trump did. Folks were removed and interims were named so there would be continuity. That is why it took 2 years to replace. In a sensitive areas they waited until a new US Attorney received Senate confirmation before replacing.

Sessions was removed because he was under investigation by the FBI’s office of professional responsibility due to mis allocation of funds and allowing his wife in his office during top secret security briefings. He broke rules that his own agents had to follow and the FBI’s internal affairs investigated him and provided a report outlining the issues to the Attorney General. Far different circumstances than what Trump did.

Nixon did not start firing people that could hold him accountable until his 2nd term, appears that Trump is starting his meltdown at a faster rate.

Comey had many issues and should have been fired under Obama. He held a press conference and gave out confidential information about Hillary’s classified emails. That is/was not his job. That is responsibility of AG. Shocking the media hasn’t picked up….One wonders whether Obama truly was in Hillary’s corner since he was allowing this to happen. And let’s not forget 2 terrorists that did mass killings in US were interviewed by FBI and they allowed them to walk without checking in on them. Day before Orlando killings, an outdoor store called FBI and gave suspects name to FBI because he was trying to purchase ammo, bullet proof vest and asking odd questions and FBI did nothing…. There was a lot of trust and confidence lost under Comey.

McCabe is a Democratic Hack, wife is a devout Clintonite. Drain the swamp.

someone censors my comments - trying again

may 3 2017 spicer doubled down, saying “the president has confidence in the director.”

russia investigation goes into overdrive w/ requests for resources, incl staff and money
so fbi top dog fired for not squelching investigation

“what a tangled [week] we weave when first we practise to deceive” apologies to shakespeare

Funny how Democrats kept saying they had no confidence in Comey and he should be fired just a few months ago and now they are outraged.

If this was Hillary doing the firing I am sure Duncan_Idaho would be so happy.

Why did he tell Priebus that the Russian connection was B*? (See Maddow MSNBC 5/10/17.)

From a 3-3-07 article in the LA Times:

Reagan replaced 89 of the 93 U.S. attorneys in his first two years in office. President Clinton had 89 new U.S. attorneys in his first two years, and President Bush had 88 new U.S. attorneys in his first two years.

Clinton fired William Sessions as FBI Director, a year plus into his first term.

Oh, come on, guys, these are all “protected class” people. You know Democrats.  The media will always cover for them and the sheep will follow blindly.  Anyone catch Colbert’s audience having the “wrong” reaction to Comey’s firing.  But then they were shown the error of their way.  Sheep don’t think for themselves.

Some people here really seem not to understand what conflicts of interest actually are. The silly nitpicking at the left is crumbs of nothing compared to those involved in the current administration.  It doesn’t take a genius to figure this out.

05-03-17 “The president has confidence in the director”  spicey
‘what a tangled [week] we weave when first we seek to deceive. . .’

All the Dems who not long ago were howling for Comey to be fired are tut-tutting over his firing now.  Hilarious.  Their lack of credibility is breath taking.

Nothing says “I’m innocent” like trying to get rid of the detective.

There are photos of Andrew McCabe campaigning for his wife, so he obviously is not being 100% truthful.

I just want someone impartial in there doing the job that we, as Americans, expect him/her to do. Something stinks in this administration…something really bad. And I cannot believe that more people from both sides aren’t pushing their reps more.

The real story is that this guy was in charge of Hillary’s Email investigation and found her clean as a whistle, when he should have recused himself because of his serious conflict of interest.  Hillary’s friend, Gov. McAuliffe, gave McCabe’s wife over $500,000 to her campaign while her husband was investigating Hillary’s emails.  Once McCabe cleared Hillary, he was immediately promoted to the top of the FBI.  Why wasn’t any of this in the story?  If this were a Republican who did this, the Democrats would have their head on a platter, but just like Bill Clinton meeting with the AG on the tarmac, we’re assured that even though it looks bad, there is nothing to see here.

Mccabe will be out in six months.  A new director will name his own number 2.

Clean sweep.

So, the guy whose wife took Clinton money for her campaign is heading the FBI.  Great.

Too bad there are photos of Mr. McCabe campaigning for Mrs. McCabe despite his statements to the contrary.

Mr. McCabe needs to go too.  Next!

Stay tuned folks!  I have an ear to the ground and the hammer is about to drop!  We are living in the history books right now, things are only going to get crazier as this administration fights for their lives.

I remember this guy’s wife took 500k from McCauliffe to run for a state senate seat unsuccessfully…sounds like a dirty cop to me, he botched the Clinton investigation, lets hope it is a short interim assignment for this guy that has no credibility with the people…

I believe you forgot to mention Clinton’s political operative McAullife’s $450 contribution to McCabe’s campaign.

Trump can fire the FBI director (not a constitutional crisis, Clinton did it also). Clinton fired every US district attorney

Put some context into Nixon, When Nixon fires Cox, it was b/c he wanted to subpoena the tape recordings made in the White House. Even if you believe the Russian collusion story, you have to admit, the investigation wasnt as far along as Watergate was when the firing occurred. (Cox was a special prosecutor for Watergate also)

Comey practically hands Trump the election with his “October surprise” and this is the thanks he gets?

Sad!

Drain the swamp and please help us in Virginia get rid of our 2 Senators.
