Barbara J. Kitrel

Barbara J. Kitrel (née Faulkner), born March 18, 1940, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 1, 2017, at the Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Center in Winchester, Virginia, surrounded by loved ones. She is survived by her beloved husband of 58 years, Darrell M. Kitrel; her daughter, Jennifer Kitrel (Tom Cogan) of Round Hill, Virginia; her son Jon Kitrel of Portland, Oregon; her sister, Scherlie Devine (Michael) of Pooler, Georgia; her brother, Michael Faulkner (Jo-Ann) of Plainfield, New Jersey; two grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Barbara was a native of St. Louis, Missouri and the daughter of Lawrence and Kathryn Faulkner of Florissant, Missouri. She attended Ames School and Central High School, where she met her sweetheart, Darrell, and married him following her graduation on February 14, 1959. She also studied subjects that interested her at the St. Louis Community College. Her career included administrative roles in the insurance, health care and staffing industries, as well as assistant director positions with the Lambert Field USO and the Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis. Barbara was a devoted wife and supported her husband’s 25-year law enforcement career with the St. Louis County Police Department. She was an expert seamstress, needle worker and quilter, and created many exquisite pieces for family, friends and charities over the years. Her passions also included gardening, home improvement projects, crafts, antiquing and hunting for treasures, often at the Blue Ridge Hospice Thrift Stores. Barbara donated her time and talents as a volunteer for many organizations when she resided in St. Louis; Mount Dora, Florida; Greenville, South Carolina; and Winchester.

A celebration of life gathering will be held at the home of Jennifer Kitrel and Tom Cogan on Sunday, September 17, 2017 (contact .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address) for more information).
