WW II Veteran - August 11, 1926 - September 28, 2017

John Edward (“Jack”) Button, 91 of Indian River, FL peacefully departed this earth on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at the Heritage Hall Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Leesburg, VA.

Jack was born in Englewood, NJ on August 11, 1926. The middle son of George Pearly Button and Evelyn Totten Button, Jack was preceded in death by his parents, his older brother, George, and his son, John Edward Button II. He is survived by his loving wife of 67 years, Virginia Ann Tilghman Button of Snow Hill MD; his brother Richard (“Dick”) Button of North Salem NY; his three daughters, Debbi O’Donnell-Virgilio (Tony), Leesburg VA, Pamela Owens Button, Leesburg VA and Melissa Totten Longosz (Joe), Atlanta GA; his 9 grandchildren, Kevin, Michael, Daniel, Owen, Jay, Bobby, Andrew, Morgan Ann and Brittany; and by his 9 great-grandchildren, Brennan, Jadyn, Lucca, Declan, Gabriel, Marco, Brecken, Griffin and Matthew.

Jack enlisted in the US Navy Air Corps at the age of 16 to serve during World War II, received a field grade promotion to pilot, was wounded in the Pacific Theater of Operations and honorably discharged. Following his military service, Jack was responsible for founding several new businesses including Shipman Ward, a worldwide distributor of used office equipment, and Swintek word processors. He was one of the founding members of Saddle River Country Day School in New Jersey, served on the Board of Directors for the Joslyn Diabetes Clinic and a charter member of YPO. Jack was an avid art collector, extensively travelled the country by motorhome and enjoyed vacationing in Lake Placid, NY, Leesburg, VA and Florida.

A memorial service was held on October 3rd at the Colonial Funeral Home in Leesburg. Internment was at the family gravesite in Lakeview Cemetery, New Canaan, CT on Thursday, October 5th.

The family wishes to express its sincere appreciation to the administrators, nurses and staff at Heritage Hall for their warm and compassionate professional care during Jack’s final months.
